The Heart of River Cruising

The Onboard Experience

Staterooms and Suites

Onboard AmaWaterways ships, you’ll find elegantly appointed staterooms and suites that welcome fewer guests than traditional river cruise ships, offering a more intimate and personal ambiance. Your stateroom or suite will be your floating sanctuary – a home away from home.

All staterooms feature generous closet and storage space, a marble bathroom with a multi-jet shower and luxurious bath products, plush cotton bathrobes and slippers, a hairdryer, a desk/dressing table, a cosy sitting area, on-demand entertainment, and complimentary daily water. Some of the ships also offer staterooms and suites with connecting doors, as well as triple and quad accommodations to make family travel more convenient. And let’s not forget the view – most of the staterooms in the fleet feature not just one, but two private balconies — a French balcony and a full outside balcony. Together, they provide a unique panoramic view of the beautiful sights along the river while inviting both fresh air and natural light inside.

The fleet’s suites offer even more benefits, including larger sitting areas, spacious bathrooms with a bathtub and shower, unparalleled balcony views, and enhanced personal space.

Dining

Indulge in exquisite dining experiences onboard with AmaWaterways’ award-winning cuisine inspired by the regions you visit. As proud members of La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs and Tables et Auberges de France, the cruise line offers an unforgettable dining experience at every meal, which is further enhanced by daily hand-selected complimentary wine chosen by acclaimed European sommeliers.

You can enjoy a bistro breakfast in the Main Lounge, dine a la carte at every meal in the Main Restaurant, or pop by the lounge for a selection of complimentary tapas throughout the day. And for a truly exceptional experience, indulge in The Chef’s Table, an intimate specialty restaurant that is included in the price of your cruise. Watch as the chef chops, sears, and plates your multi-course tasting menu. Each meal at The Chef’s Table is served with complimentary hand-selected local wines from Europe’s renowned wine regions.

Entertainment

One of the highlights of travelling to new destinations is experiencing the local culture first-hand. AmaWaterways offers evening entertainment on board featuring musicians, folkloric dancers, and storytellers who are based in the cities you visit. They are excited to showcase their cultural traditions and talents with you, providing an immersive and authentic experience. From traditional Bavarian music to local quartets and contemporary piano favourites, the onboard entertainment schedule is diverse and engaging every night.

Besides the local entertainment, you can also look forward to Sip and Sail cocktail hour, and a variety of special events such as the Welcome Cocktail, Welcome Dinner, La Chaine des Rotisseurs Dinner, Captain’s Cocktail, and Gala Dinner. During the day you will also find distinctive onboard programs including lectures, that add an extra layer of enrichment to your cruise experience.

Facilities and Amenities

With few guests onboard, the AmaWaterways fleet has the luxury of space to include more luxurious amenities. These include rejuvenating spa treatments, small-group fitness classes, a swimming pool on the sun deck with a swim-up bar, and dedicated Wellness Hosts to guide you on your wellness journey. In your stateroom, you can relax with a Hollywood Blockbuster, or a selection of English-language programming on your personal Entertainment-On-Demand system, or stay connected with home using the complimentary Wi-Fi onboard.

Cruising with Children

AmaWaterways doesn’t offer child-specific programs or facilities, so that is something to keep in mind if you are planning a family cruise. Guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult in their stateroom and must be supervised at all times. The minimum age limit for guests is 4 years old, unless otherwise agreed upon with the cruise line. Please note that for the AmaWaterways Africa Safaris and Wildlife Cruise program, this minimum age limit is 12 years old.

On Shore Experiences

At AmaWaterways, all excursions are included, giving you the freedom to choose from up to six options each day. Whether you prefer a gentle walk, an active adventure, or a relaxed morning, there are tours and activities to cater to all interests and activity levels. For those looking to explore in a more active way, the cruise line offers complimentary bicycles on board for guests to use at their leisure. Join a guided bike tour along scenic riverside pathways or venture out on your own to discover the sights and sounds of each destination. If hiking is more your speed, you can also opt for a guided hike in any number of picturesque locations.

Accessibility

Accessibility on AmaWaterways river cruises is limited and there are a number of considerations to take note of when deciding whether this is the right cruise for you. Accessibility for wheelchair users on European ships is limited. While you will find an elevator between the two main decks, it does not reach the Sun Deck or Piano Deck. Guests can move around the dining room and lounge in their wheelchair, but the staterooms do not accommodate wheelchairs. Guests would need to be able to move around their stateroom on their own and store their chair in the room due to limited storage on board.

Boarding and disembarking the ship could also be challenging as the planks are narrow and typically unable to accommodate a wheelchair or scooter’s width. Guests would need to be able to transfer in and out of their wheelchair independently and the wheelchair must be light enough to be lifted on and off the ramps. Occasionally, you may also need to disembark through another ship tied up in port, with access usually only available from the Sun Deck, where there are only stairs. The cities visited during excursions often have cobblestone walkways, which may be difficult to manoeuvre with a wheelchair, and the motor coaches used for transport do not have lifts and require guests to navigate 4 or 5 steep steps to get on and off. For itineraries in Vietnam, Cambodia, Africa, and Egypt, guests must be able-bodied as these destinations have many unpaved roads and our ships do not have elevators.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a dress code on board?

For all itineraries, comfortable, layered clothing that can be adapted to changing weather conditions is advised. For evenings, “Casually elegant” attire is expected, although you may want to pack something a little dressier for the Captain’s night/Farewell Dinner. If your cruise is visiting Egypt, Jordan or the UAE, plan to dress modestly as they are primarily Muslim countries and we always show respect to the local traditions of the countries we visit.

What is “tethering” or “double docking”?

In Europe, all river ships share docking ports, so it is likely that at some point your ship will be docked next to one or two other river ships. During this time, your view from your stateroom may be temporarily obscured by a neighbouring ship, and disembarkation/embarkation may include walking through the adjacent ship(s) lobby or Sun Deck to reach the shore.

What language is spoken on board?

The official language on board all AmaWaterways ships is English, and most crew members are fluent. All announcements and lectures will be presented in English, and all local guides are also fluent in the language.
