The Arctic Line – Northbound

Begin your voyage from Copenhagen to Tromsø in Denmark’s graceful capital – a place where tradition and modernity combine with a colourful seafaring history. If you have time before boarding, stroll the cobbled lanes of Nyhavn, the beautiful harbour that was once filled with tall ships heading all over the globe, or visit Amalienborg Palace to watch the changing of the guard. From the waterfront, the spires of the old town rise against the northern sky, while the scent of roasting coffee and mulled wine drifts from canal-side cafés.

Today we arrive in Bergen, Norway’s Gateway to the Fjords. Encircled by mountains and sea, this vibrant port city was once the heart of Hanseatic trade, where merchants from across Europe gathered to exchange fish, timber, and tales of distant voyages.

Rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1904, Ålesund rose anew in elegant Art Nouveau style, its pastel towers and ornate façades mirrored in the still harbour waters. The town spreads across a series of islands, framed by the Sunnmøre Alps; it’s a masterpiece of architecture set within a masterpiece of nature.

Nestled among fjords and peaks, Narvik stands at the crossroads of Arctic nature and human history. Once a vital port for the iron trade, it played a dramatic role during the Second World War, its calm waters still echoing with stories of courage and endurance.

The Lofoten Islands rise up like a dream – granite peaks thrusting straight from cold seas. We dock in Svolvær, Lofoten’s lively heart, where fishing boats sway in the harbour beneath the twin spires of the mountain known as the Svolvær Goat.

By evening we reach Alta, a town framed by tundra and silent forests, and gateway to Norway’s far north. Once an ancient meeting place, Alta’s riverbanks still hold traces of early civilisation in the UNESCO-listed rock carvings that depict reindeer, hunters and boats from millennia past

Wake up and spend another day in Alta, where winter adventures and northern serenity meet. Glide through pine forests behind a team of huskies, try snowshoeing across frozen plains, or join a guided trip inland toward the sweeping tundra of Finnmark.

Today we arrive in Honningsvåg, gateway to the legendary North Cape – a landmark long regarded as the northernmost point of mainland Europe. The town itself is small and welcoming, perched among rugged hills and icy bays where fishing boats come and go with the tide. From here, an optional excursion takes you across the windswept plateau of Magerøya Island to the North Cape itself. Standing by the 300m cliffs that fall sharply into the Arctic Ocean, you’ll feel the vast scale of the landscape – sea, sky and tundra stretching endlessly around you.

Our final port of call is Tromsø; lively, cultured and ringed by snow-clad peaks. Once a base for Arctic expeditions, the city still hums with the spirit of adventure. Wander its streets of colourful wooden houses, visit the striking Arctic Cathedral or cross the bridge to Polaria for an introduction to polar wildlife. You might also stop by the Polar Museum, where tales of daring explorers and trappers bring the Arctic’s past vividly to life.

This morning marks the end of your voyage, as the ship comes to rest once more at the quay. Step out on deck for a final moment and take in the scene – the snow-dusted mountains that rise above the city, the clear Arctic air and the quiet rhythm of life in the far north.
