If you have a morning before embarkation, one last stroll through the Gothic Quarter or a final coffee on Las Ramblas is the perfect send-off. Then board the ship as Barcelona’s extraordinary skyline, including Gaudi’s still-unfinished Sagrada Familia piercing the horizon, fades behind you.

The air carries spice and salt in equal measure, the medina’s lanes fold in on themselves in a maze of colour and noise, and the view from the Kasbah takes in both continents at once, Europe visible across the narrow strait. Visit the Dar el Makhzen palace museum, wander the souks of the old medina, drink mint tea in a rooftop cafe above the Strait of Gibraltar and let Africa do the rest.

Madeira rises from the Atlantic like a volcanic garden in full bloom.
The terraced cliffs, subtropical flowers and year-round mild climate make Funchal one of the most beautiful ports in the Atlantic. Take the cable car up to Monte and ride the famous wicker toboggan back down through the flower-lined streets. Walk one of the island’s extraordinary levada irrigation channels through the laurel forest. And before you return to the ship, try a glass of Madeira wine in the city that made it famous.

Porto is one of Europe’s most atmospheric cities, and a single day here is never quite enough.
The azulejo-tiled facades of the Ribeira district, the granite quays along the Douro and the baroque towers of the skyline create a backdrop unlike anywhere else. Cross the Dom Luis Bridge to the Vila Nova de Gaia wine cellars, where every major port house offers tours and tastings in their centuries-old lodges. Or simply find a cafe in the old town, order a francesinha and watch the trams rattle past. Porto rewards those who slow down.

Lisbon is a city that surprises, and a day here never feels long enough.
Ride the historic Tram 28 up through the steep cobbled streets of Alfama to the Sao Jorge Castle for views across the entire city and the Tagus estuary. Walk the riverside promenade past the Monument to the Discoveries and the magnificent Jeronimos Monastery. Or escape to the elegant resort towns of Cascais and Estoril along the Estoril line train, some of the most beautiful coastline in Portugal.

Cadiz is the departure point for one of the great day trips in Europe: Seville.
An 80-minute drive inland, Seville contains the Real Alcazar, a stunning Moorish royal palace that rivals the Alhambra in Granada, the vast Gothic Cathedral housing the tomb of Christopher Columbus, and the winding lanes of the Santa Cruz barrio where orange trees line every street. Return to Cadiz for sunset over the Atlantic and a plate of the freshest fried fish you have ever tasted.

Malaga is far more than a gateway city, and it deserves proper exploration.
The birthplace of Picasso has a vibrant old town, a magnificent 11th-century Moorish Alcazaba fortress, the hilltop Gibralfaro castle with sweeping views across the city and coast, and a contemporary art museum scene that has quietly become one of Spain’s most impressive. The tapas bars around the Atarazanas market are exceptional, and the beaches of the Costa del Sol are just minutes away for those who want sun and sand before sailing back to Barcelona.
