Agadir is the capital of the Agadir Ida-U-Tanan Prefecture and of the Souss-Massa economic region. The majority of its inhabitants speak Amazigh language, one of the two official languages of Morocco. It was the locale for the Agadir Crisis of 1911 between France and Germany that presaged the First World War.

Stroll through the narrow streets of the old medina and visit the spice market. Admire the stunning and enormous Hassan II Mosque built beside the sea. Or journey inland to Rabat and Meknes, two fascinating old cities of kasbahs, souks and Moroccan tradition. Shopping: Take home a flowing caftan, some sandals, Berber jewelry, interesting hammered tin items, leather goods and rugs. Dining: Couscous, spicy lamb dishes and tea are a Moroccan treat.

Algeciras sits across the bay from Gibraltar, with its limestone Rock rising over the strait. It’s also the gateway to Ronda’s cliffside old town and the whitewashed hill villages of Cadiz province.

Spend a day in Granada seeing the magnificent Alhambra and Generalife Gardens, last stronghold of the Moors, or venture into the mountains to the picturesque Mijas, one of Andalusia’s dazzling “white” towns. Explore delightful Málaga, its Alcazaba, Roman theater and beautiful cathedral, or discover the charming resorts of Marbella and Puerto Banus along the famed Costa del Sol.

This walled city has always been a major naval port due to its natural harbor and strategic location. Enjoy a hilltop view from Concepción Castle, which served as a fortress for the Carthaginians, Romans and other peoples who once occupied the city. Visit the 1st century B.C. Roman Theater, the remains of the 13th century Cathedral of Santa Maria and the Naval Museum. For modernist architecture, see the City Hall, Grand Hotel and Casino.

With its youthful spirit and natural beauty, the Balearic island of Ibiza (or “Eivissa,” as it’s known locally) appeals to those who love the outdoors. The beach-blessed coastline is majestically rugged, and the hills are covered with olive and fig trees. The capital of Ciudad de Ibiza offers a multitude of diversions, especially in the historic Dalt Vila district. Visit its 16th century Castle of Ibiza and the churches and Museum of Contemporary Art inside the fortified walls. With its cobblestone streets, Ibiza is a scenic city to walk. Two of the most popular beaches are Talamanca and Ses Figueretes.

Enjoy delightful Mahon and its charming shops. Then explore the island and savor its dramatic views and landscape, quaint villages, farms and well-preserved taulas of the island’s megalithic civilization. Perhaps see a castle or a monastery and impressive cliff-top views.

Visit the magnificent Gothic cathedral and the amazing La Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudí’s unfinished masterpiece. Enjoy the lovely Montjuic Gardens, Gaudí’s other fabulous structures, the charming squares of the old Gothic Quarter and the Ramblas, Barcelona’s famed downtown promenade. Or visit beautiful Montserrat and its monastery in a breathtaking setting high in the mountains.

Valencia pairs Spain’s largest silk exchange with the space-age curves of the City of Arts and Sciences. Wander the old town’s orange-tree squares, or head to the beach for the dish the city invented: paella.

Palma’s Gothic cathedral rises straight from the harbour, one of the most recognisable skylines in the Mediterranean. Beyond the old town, the Tramuntana mountains and hillside villages reward a day trip inland.

Alicante’s old quarter climbs to the Santa Barbara Castle, with views across the marina and out to the Mediterranean. It’s also the coastal gateway to the Costa Blanca’s beaches and inland almond groves.

A second sea day between Spain and the French Riviera. Settle in for a long lunch at Polo Grill or Toscana, or simply watch the coastline slip by from your veranda.

Marseille’s Vieux Port has welcomed traders and travellers for over two and a half thousand years. Beyond the harbourside bouillabaisse, Provence’s lavender fields and hilltop villages are within easy reach.

Once a quiet fishing village, Saint-Tropez is now shorthand for Riviera glamour, its harbour lined with superyachts and pastel-coloured cafes. Wander the old town’s narrow lanes for a quieter side of the town.

Monte Carlo climbs the cliffs above the Mediterranean, home to the Casino de Monte-Carlo and the Prince’s Palace. It’s a compact port, easy to explore on foot between the harbour and the old town.

La Spezia is the gateway to Cinque Terre, five pastel fishing villages strung along a rugged stretch of Ligurian coast. Each is linked by cliffside walking trails and local trains, ideal for a day of village-hopping.

Livorno opens the door to Tuscany, from Pisa’s Leaning Tower to the Renaissance galleries of Florence. Wine lovers can head instead into the Chianti hills for a day among the vineyards.

Arrive into Civitavecchia this morning, with a private transfer included to your Rome hotel. Settle in before two full days to explore the city at your own pace.
