There are few coastlines on earth as raw, as ancient, or as humbling as the Kimberley. Aboard Le Soléal, this 10-night expedition from Broome to Darwin traces one of Australia’s last true wilderness frontiers: a landscape shaped by 350 million years of tides, storms and silence, where saltwater crocodiles patrol mangrove rivers, 80-metre waterfalls thunder into sandstone gorges, and rock art older than any civilisation in Europe waits on the walls of remote island caves.
Ponant’s naturalist and cultural specialists lead every Zodiac excursion and shore landing, unlocking places that most travellers will never see. The King George Twin Falls. The ancient Gwion Gwion galleries of Jar Island. The Horizontal Falls roaring through the McLarty Range. The Hunter River winding through pristine mangrove forest at dawn. Every day brings something that cannot be found anywhere else on earth.

All Zodiac excursions, shore landings, destination lectures, all meals, open bar and Wi-Fi are included, along with a 30% Ponant Bonus saving already in the price. And with an exclusive €300 per person shipboard credit, you have the freedom to spend it however you choose, whether that’s a spa treatment, a browse through the boutique, or the ultimate Kimberley experience: a helicopter flight over the Horizontal Falls.

YOUR ITINERARY

Day 1
26th Jun 2028
Broome

Group transfer hotel to port, depart 7:00pm Your expedition begins in Broome, the legendary pearling town at the gateway to the Kimberley. A group transfer takes you from your hotel to the port, where Le Soléal awaits. As the ship slips out of the harbour in the early evening, the iconic red pindan cliffs of the Kimberley coast come into view and the adventure begins.

...
Day 2
27th Jun 2028
Lacepede Islands

A full day at one of Western Australia’s most important wildlife sanctuaries. The Lacepede Islands are the state’s most significant breeding habitat for Green Turtles and home to one of the world’s largest colonies of Brown Boobies. Guided Zodiac tours weave through nesting seabirds and turtle-filled waters. Landings are not permitted, preserving one of the last truly undisturbed ecosystems on the Australian coastline.

...
Day 3
28th Jun 2028
Collier Bay

An early morning exploration of one of the Kimberley’s most dramatic tidal landscapes. Tidal ranges here exceed 14 metres, among the largest on earth. Montgomery Reef, the world’s largest inshore reef, rises from the sea as the tide retreats, cascading water off its edges in rivers and mini-waterfalls that few travellers ever witness.

...
Day 4
29th Jun 2028
Collier Bay

A second full day in the extraordinary landscapes of Collier Bay. Head to Talbot Bay for the Horizontal Falls, described by Sir David Attenborough as one of the greatest natural wonders of the world, where massive tidal forces push water through narrow gorges in the McLarty Range at extraordinary speed. Ancient Wandjina rock art galleries lie hidden in caves and grottos throughout the bay.

...
Day 5
30th Jun 2028
Careening Bay

Named after the 1820 voyage of HMS Mermaid, whose crew spent ten days repairing their leaking vessel on these sands. The ship’s carpenter carved the vessel’s name and year into a boab tree that still stands today, now three metres wide and National Heritage listed, a quiet monument to an era of extraordinary exploration.

...
Day 6
1st Jul 2028
Hunter River

An early start for one of the expedition’s most immersive experiences. Le Soléal anchors at the mouth of the Hunter River as the sun rises over the sandstone escarpment known as Kampamantiya, more than 200 metres high before giving way to the world’s most pristine mangrove forests. Zodiac expeditions wind through 18 species of mangrove while naturalist guides scan the banks for saltwater crocodiles and rare birdlife. Optional helicopter flights to Mitchell Falls are available from the beach.

...
Day 7
2nd Jul 2028
Swift Bay

A full day in the Bonaparte Archipelago, named by explorer Phillip Parker King after Jonathan Swift. Deeply fractured sandstone shelters line the T-shaped bay, their walls covered in Wandjina and Gwion Gwion rock art. Guided walks lead through multiple galleries in one of the Kimberley’s most atmospherically remote settings.

...
Day 8
3rd Jul 2028
Vansittart Bay (Jar Island)

A full day on Jar Island, home to one of the most significant rock art sites in the world. The Gwion Gwion galleries here are believed to be over 30,000 years old, representing the oldest detailed depictions of human figures on earth. A guided walk past extraordinary rock formations brings these ancient images up close in a setting of complete and humbling stillness.

...
Day 9
4th Jul 2028
King George River

A long and spectacular day saved for the Kimberley’s most iconic natural wonder. Zodiac expeditions carry you deep into an 80-metre-high sandstone gorge, its ancient walls shifting through ochre, rust and gold as the light moves across them throughout the day. The journey culminates at the King George Twin Falls, the highest single-drop falls in the entire Kimberley, thundering into the canyon below.

...
Day 10
5th Jul 2028
Cruising at Sea

A well-earned day of rest on the open water. Enjoy the spa, fitness centre, pool, onboard lectures and photography sessions with Ponant’s dedicated photographers, or simply find a quiet spot on the upper deck to watch for marine life and reflect on the extraordinary landscapes of the past nine days.

...
Day 11
6th Jul 2028
Darwin

Le Soléal arrives in Darwin in the early morning and the expedition concludes in Australia’s most distinctive capital city. Darwin is unlike any other Australian city, shaped by Japanese bombing in 1942 and by Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Eve 1974, and its multicultural frontier character sits just 800 kilometres south of the Indonesian islands in a way that feels genuinely closer to Southeast Asia than to Sydney. Disembark this morning and ask your Cruiseabout specialist about extending your Darwin stay. The Defence of Darwin Experience, the Adelaide River jumping crocodile cruise and the Mindil Beach Sunset Market are all worth the time before your flights home. For those travelling solo, the free solo supplements available on selected Ponant Kimberley voyages can be confirmed with your Cruiseabout specialist when booking.

YOUR SHIP - The Le Soleal

A sleek silhouette, a welcoming intimate atmosphere, discover aboard this new ship the philosophy that has made L’Austral and LE BORéAL such a success: the spirit of Yacht Cruises. Sailing under the French flag, this magnificent yacht of only 132 staterooms and Suites, with balconies, joined our fleet in July 2013. You will be enchanted by the contemporary decor inspired by the luxury yachting world, with fluid lines and a modern colour scheme combining natural wood with shades of grey and white. A refined ambiance is enhanced by the quality of the workmanship and materials: white Corian counters in the lobby contrast with the warmth of leather to recall a boat’s hull, while the central sculpture of enamelled pieces takes its inspiration from the sea. In the loungebar, the carpet picks up a tennis stripe theme symbolising a certain idea of cruising, one synonymous with French elegance and a chic seaside spirit.
