Arrival day in Reykjavik, with check-in at the included hotel ahead of the cruise. Höfði House, a white timber villa on the seafront, hosted the 1986 summit between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. The city sits at 64 degrees north, so midsummer evenings stay light.
...Iceland’s parliament meets in a dark basalt building from 1881 on Austurvöllur square. A bronze statue of Jón Sigurðsson, the leader of the independence movement, stands at its centre. Guests board L’Austral and sail in the evening.
...In 1963 an eruption raised the island of Surtsey from the sea off Heimaey. It kept growing until 1967, and UNESCO listed it in 2008. Only scientists may land there. Heimaey’s own cliffs hold one of the largest Atlantic puffin colonies in the world. In 1973 a fissure opened beside the town and Eldfell grew in a matter of days.
...Djupivogur has a pyramid-shaped peak, Búlandstindur, rising 1,069 metres behind the harbour. On the shore, 34 granite eggs by the sculptor Sigurður Guðmundsson stand for the bird species that nest in the area. The village was an old trading post, and its Langabúð warehouse dates to 1790.
