On the edge of the Arctic, Iceland is both romantic and untamed. Along its western coast, glaciers, vertiginous cliffs, verdant plains and waterfalls compose a breathtaking picture. Between volcanos, geysers and basalt rocks, the “land of fire and ice” reveals its lunar landscapes. Peaceful fjord branches provide shelter for fishermen’s villages, while puffins, Arctic foxes and Icelandic horses people this natural sanctuary. The icy waters of the sea are home to humpback whales and orcas, performing their striking ballet in the heart of raw and sovereign nature.

Iceland sits on the edge of the Arctic, a landscape that is both dramatic and untamed. Along its western coast, glaciers, towering cliffs, green plains and waterfalls sit side by side, while volcanoes, geysers and basalt rock formations give the land of fire and ice its own character. Quiet fjords shelter small fishing villages, and puffins, Arctic foxes and Icelandic horses call this landscape home. Humpback whales and orcas move through the surrounding waters, adding to the sense of raw, sovereign nature at every turn.
Onboard L’Austral, every stateroom comes with all meals included, round the clock room service, and beverages throughout the restaurants, bars and in-room mini bar. One shore excursion per person, per port, per day is included, along with destination lectures and wifi onboard. A private transfer from the airport and a hotel stay in Reykjavik are included ahead of the cruise, so there is nothing left to arrange.
YOUR ITINERARY
Arrival day in Reykjavik, with a private transfer from the airport to the included hotel for the first night. According to the sagas, the Norse settler Ingólfur Arnarson named the place Reykjavik, or Smoky Bay, around 874 after steam rising from hot springs. Today it is the world’s northernmost capital of a sovereign state.
...Guðjón Samúelsson drew inspiration for Hallgrimskirkja’s stepped façade from Iceland’s basalt columns, and construction ran from 1945 to 1986. On the harbour, Harpa’s glass façade, designed with artist Olafur Eliasson, opened in 2011. Guests board L’Austral and sail in the evening.
...Vestmannaeyjar means Westman Islands, after Irish slaves who fled there in the settlement era, since Norse settlers called the Irish Westmen. In January 1973 the Eldfell volcano erupted at the edge of Heimaey, and more than 5,000 residents left overnight by fishing boat. Crews later pumped seawater onto the lava to save the harbour. The day includes scenic sailing along the islands, where puffins nest on the cliffs in summer.
...Afternoon and evening in the fishing town of Grundarfjordur.
...Evening call at the Arctic Circle island of Grimsey.
...Full day in the northern city of Akureyri.
...Guests spend the morning and early afternoon in Isafjordur, the main town of the Westfjords, which sits on a narrow gravel spit beneath steep mountains. The Neðstikaupstaður quarter keeps 18th-century timber warehouses from the Danish trading era, and one of them houses the Westfjords Heritage Museum
...A full day back in Reykjavik. The Settlement Exhibition in the city centre wraps around the remains of a 10th-century longhouse. Northeast of the capital, Thingvellir National Park marks where Iceland’s parliament, the Althing, first met in 930. The park sits in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart.
...Guests disembark in Reykjavik. On the waterfront, Sun Voyager is Jón Gunnar Árnason’s 1990 steel sculpture, shaped like a longship and made as a tribute to the sun.
