YOUR ITINERARY
Board Royal Princess in Sydney and sail out past the Opera House with the Harbour Bridge behind you. Arrive early and walk the Royal Botanic Garden to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair for the classic harbour view before you board.
...Settle in and find your favourite spot on Royal Princess. Start with a pastry from the Patisserie, then book dinner at Sabatini’s Italian restaurant while the first of three Tasman Sea days gets underway.
...Claim a deck chair for Movies Under the Stars after dark or catch a show at the Limelight Theatre. Mid-Tasman, with no land in sight, is the best time to slow down.
...Spend the morning in the Library or try an art class, then take a final lap of the deck. New Zealand appears tomorrow when you reach the Bay of Islands.
...Tender ashore to the birthplace of modern New Zealand, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. Walk the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to see the carved meeting house and the great war canoe, or cruise out to the Hole in the Rock at Cape Brett.
...Auckland sits on a field of volcanoes and two of them make easy half-day outings. Climb Mt Eden for the skyline or take a ferry to Rangitoto Island and walk to its summit. Waiheke Island’s vineyards are a ferry ride away if lunch is the priority.
...Auckland is behind you and Marlborough wine country comes next. Warm up at Vines Wine & Seafood Bar and settle into the Piano Lounge once the day winds down.
...Picton sits at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound and opens onto Marlborough wine country. Spend the day at a Blenheim cellar door sampling sauvignon blanc, or walk part of the Queen Charlotte Track and finish with Marlborough Greenshell mussels back in town.
...Scott and Shackleton both left Lyttelton for Antarctica. Christchurch is a short transfer away, where you can punt along the Avon River past the Botanic Gardens or visit the International Antarctic Centre to see what those explorers faced.
...Dunedin’s Scottish roots show in the Octagon, where a statue of Robert Burns watches over the city centre. Tour the Dunedin Railway Station, then head to the Otago Peninsula for Larnach Castle or the royal albatross colony at Taiaroa Head.
...Spend the day on deck as the ship cruises through glacier-carved fiords. Sheer cliffs rise from the water, rainforest clings to the rock and waterfalls drop straight into the sound.
...Fiordland is still fresh and the Tasman Sea stretches ahead. Browse the ScholarShip@Sea programme or order a pizza from the Pizzeria and swap favourite moments with the people you have met on board.
...Your last full day at sea. Book a final dinner at the Sterling Steakhouse and pack before Sydney appears tomorrow.
...Finish the voyage where it began, with the Heads giving way to the Sydney skyline from the open deck.
