This 16-night voyage aboard Viking Kadlin travels the full length of the Danube from Bucharest to Vienna, taking in five capital cities and a series of extraordinary lesser-known ports including the dramatic Iron Gate gorge, the fortress towns of Serbia, the ancient wine cellars of Ilok and the sombre streets of Vukovar, with all meals, excursions and gratuities included.
This is not the standard Rhine-Main-Danube river cruise. Departing Bucharest and sailing west through Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia and Austria, this route travels the Danube’s most varied and least-explored stretch, through landscapes and histories that most European river travellers never encounter. The familiar grandeur of Budapest, Bratislava and Vienna is all here, but it arrives after ten days of genuinely surprising discovery.

Be captivated by lesser-known gems as you visit towns and cities across the Balkans. Explore Bucharest’s old-world charm, tree-lined boulevards and witness its socialist architecture. With visits to five capital cities, this 17-day voyage is sure to inspire.
YOUR ITINERARY
Welcome to Bucharest, one of Eastern Europe’s most surprising and underrated capital cities.
Check in to your hotel and spend the evening exploring at your own pace. The grand French-style boulevards of the city centre earned Bucharest its nickname “the Paris of the East,” and the Belle Epoque architecture, the lively Lipscani old town district and the extraordinary Palace of Parliament — the world’s largest civilian administrative building with over 1,100 rooms — give the city a scale and character that consistently catches visitors off guard
A full day in Bucharest reveals a city of extraordinary contradictions that rewards the curious.
Ceausescu’s socialist megastructures loom over 18th-century Orthodox churches that survived his bulldozers by centimetres. The George Enescu National Museum, with its extraordinary Art Nouveau facade, sits alongside communist-era apartment blocks. Your included shore excursion covers the highlights, and the Bucharest of cobblestone alleys, outdoor terraces and remarkably good food is best discovered on foot afterwards.
Today the Danube begins.
After breakfast, transfer to Constanta on the Black Sea coast where Viking Kadlin awaits. Board your ship and settle in as Romania’s most historic port city introduces itself. The art nouveau Constanta Casino on the seafront boardwalk, the Grand Mosque minaret towering above the old town and the remarkable 4th-century Roman floor mosaic hidden behind the archaeology museum make Constanta far more rewarding than a typical embarkation port.
A second day in Constanta gives you time to go deeper into one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on the Black Sea coast.
The National History and Archaeological Museum holds Greek and Roman artefacts from over two millennia of settlement, and the ancient Roman mosaic in the adjacent open-air site is one of the most remarkable things you will see on the entire voyage. The Naval History Museum documents a maritime heritage stretching back to Roman times. This afternoon Viking Kadlin heads west into the Danube delta and the extraordinary landscape of the lower river begins.
Pleven is one of Bulgaria’s most historically significant cities, and the story it tells is both ancient and surprisingly moving.
The city was a key fortress through the Bulgarian Empire and the Ottoman period, and the Siege of Pleven in 1877, a pivotal moment in Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule, is commemorated throughout the town with museums, monuments and a mass grave site that still carries genuine solemnity. The panorama museum depicting the siege is one of the most extraordinary historical installations in Eastern Europe.
Vidin is one of the oldest towns on the Bulgarian Danube, and its riverside castle is unlike anything else on this voyage.
Babini Vidini Kuli, which translates as Granny Vida’s Towers, is the only entirely preserved medieval Bulgarian fortress, its thick ring walls and stout towers still standing exactly as they were built centuries ago. The town that grew around it, with its minarets and domes from the Ottoman period, gives Vidin an atmosphere of layered history that rewards slow exploration. The surrounding region is known for some of Bulgaria’s finest wines.
oday Viking Kadlin enters the Iron Gate, one of the most dramatic river passages in the world.
The gorge cuts through the Carpathian and Balkan Mountains in a series of narrows where towering white limestone cliffs draped in forest rise on both sides of the ship. On the Serbian bank, Trajan’s Tablet marks the Roman military road carved into the cliff face. On the Romanian side, the enormous rock sculpture of Dacian king Decebalus, 40 metres high, stares across the water. At Donji Milanovac you step ashore at the gateway to Djerdap National Park, home to Lepenski Vir, the oldest planned settlement in Europe, discovered in 1960 with sculptures and tools dating back 8,000 years.
Belgrade has been destroyed and rebuilt 20 times throughout its history, and the energy of a city that refuses to stay down runs through every corner of it.
The Kalemegdan Fortress at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers has guarded this site for over 2,000 years and offers sweeping views over both rivers. The Church of St Sava, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, dominates the skyline of modern Beograd. The city’s cafe culture, its music and its nightlife are legendary across the Balkans, and the riverside Skadarlija bohemian quarter is worth every minute of your free time.
Novi Sad is Serbia’s most cultured and cosmopolitan city, and the Petrovaradin Fortress above it is one of the most impressive baroque military structures in Europe.
Known as the Gibraltar of the Danube, the fortress’s labyrinth of underground tunnels, clock towers and ramparts overlooks the entire city and the Danube plain beyond. The historic Stari Grad neighbourhood below is lined with excellent cafes, galleries and the Museum of Vojvodina. Every July the fortress becomes the stage for EXIT, one of Europe’s great music festivals, but in late October it belongs entirely to the river traveller.
Ilok is one of Croatia’s great surprises, a riverside wine town with over two thousand years of viticulture and one of the most dramatic castle positions on the entire Danube.
The 15th-century Ilok Castle presides over the medieval town from the hilltop above the river, offering magnificent views across to Serbia on the opposite bank. The town’s wine cellars line almost every street, and the local Graševina and Traminer whites are among the finest produced anywhere in the Pannonian basin. A visit here feels genuinely off the beaten track in the best possible way.
Vukovar carries its history with quiet dignity, and a visit here is one of the most profound experiences on this entire voyage.
The town’s archaeological heritage stretches back over 5,000 years to the Vucedol culture, one of the most significant Bronze Age civilisations in Europe. But Vukovar is better known for 1991, when it endured the longest siege of the Yugoslav Wars and became the only European town to suffer such systematic destruction since World War II. The restored Eltz Manor, the Baroque Church of St Nicholas and the water tower, deliberately left unrepaired as a monument to the siege, tell a story that every visitor should take the time to hear.
Mohács is a town that carries two very different kinds of memory: one joyful, one sombre.
The Busójárás Carnival, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, fills the streets each February with busós — fur-clad, masked figures parading through the town to drive away winter. But Mohács is also the site of one of the most catastrophic battles in Hungarian history: the Ottoman victory of 1526 that claimed over 17,000 Hungarian lives and led to 150 years of occupation. The Mohács Visitor Centre and the mass grave site nearby commemorate this with quiet solemnity.
After ten days of discovery along the lower Danube, Budapest arrives with a jolt of imperial grandeur.
Hungary’s capital straddles the river in two distinct personalities: traditional hillside Buda with its castle quarter, thermal baths and Baroque palaces on one side, and the wide boulevards, ruin bars and Art Nouveau coffee houses of modern Pest on the other. The illuminated Parliament building reflected in the Danube at night is one of the defining images of Central Europe. Your included shore excursion covers the highlights of both sides of the city.
A second day in Budapest gives you the freedom to follow your own curiosity.
The Széchenyi thermal baths, the largest in Europe, are a mandatory experience. The Great Market Hall offers the finest Hungarian produce and paprika under one roof. The Castle District’s Matthias Church and the Fishermen’s Bastion deliver views across the Danube that no photograph adequately prepares you for. And the ruin bars of the Jewish Quarter, built inside crumbling pre-war buildings, are the most distinctive nightlife scene in any European city.
Bratislava is one of Europe’s most compact and walkable capitals, and a day here consistently surprises visitors who expected less.
The hilltop castle above the Danube offers views across three countries simultaneously. The Baroque palaces and pedestrian lanes of the old town are beautifully preserved, and eleven Hungarian kings and queens were crowned in St Martin’s Cathedral, which sits almost directly beside the motorway in one of the more incongruous settings in European architecture. Your included shore excursion covers the old town, and free time afterwards is best spent in one of the city’s excellent wine bars.
After sixteen days on the Danube, Vienna arrives as the grandest possible finale.
The Ringstrasse boulevard, lined with opera houses, parliament buildings, museums and palaces built by the Habsburgs to impress the world, is among the grandest urban promenades anywhere in Europe. Your included shore excursion covers the highlights, from the Hofburg Palace to the Vienna State Opera. And a Sachertorte in a Viennese Kaffeehaus, after everything this voyage has delivered, tastes like exactly what it is: a celebration.
A second day in Vienna is an invitation to go beyond the grand monuments and find the city’s more intimate character.
The Kunsthistorisches Museum’s Habsburg art collection is one of the finest in the world. The MuseumsQuartier showcases Klimt, Schiele and contemporary Austrian art in a converted imperial stable complex. And the Viennese coffeehouse tradition, listed by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, is best experienced over an Einspänner coffee and a pastry in a cafe that has barely changed since the 19th century. Vienna does not rush, and today you do not have to either.
Your journey through the heart of Eastern Europe draws to a close today.
From the Black Sea coast of Romania to the imperial boulevards of Vienna, this voyage has traced the full arc of the Danube through landscapes and histories that most European travellers never encounter. Your transfer to the airport departs from the ship. It has been quite a river.
