The Onboard Experience

Staterooms and Suites

Regardless of whether you choose an APT river, ocean or coastal expedition cruise, you are guaranteed luxurious accommodations with hotel-style amenities such as plush linen, flat-screen TVs and WiFi. On river cruise ships you will find staterooms with panoramic balcony windows; suites with a bedroom, a living room, a spacious bathroom, and an outdoor balcony; and in certain suite categories, private butler service.

On ocean and expedition cruises, your stateroom and suite options vary by cruise ship, depending on who APT has partnered with for certain itineraries. Just ask your Cruise Travel Advisor for stateroom details for the ship that is specific to your cruise itinerary.

All of APT’s cruises offer unforgettable dining options and experiences so that you can truly taste your way through your itinerary. From world-class restaurants to cooking classes and market tours, APT cruises offer gastronomic adventures in each destination you visit.

In New Zealand, delight in the authentic flavors of the South Island during an unforgettable Taste of Fiordland Dinner in charming Te Anau. Canada’s Butchart Gardens in Victoria opens it’s gates early for APT guests, where you can enjoy an exclusive breakfast in the historic Butchart family home. Afterwards, you can wander through the stunning floral displays without the usual crowds. In Vietnam, let your taste buds dance with a specially selected multicourse fusion meal at the award-winning Vietnam House in Ho Chi Minh City. Alternatively, unleash your inner chef during acooking class in Hoi An, where you’ll prepare gourmet creations and enjoy them afterwards. Buenos Aires invites you to experience the local culture through a passionate tango show and a delectable selection of dishes, including baked empanadas, succulent Argentinian steak, and flavorful Patagonian trout.

APT understands that their guests value versatility, including when it comes to their dining options. That’s is why they extend their “Freedom of Choice” ethos to their dining options both onshore and onboard. You get to indulge your taste buds and exercise your freedom of choice.

Extraordinary dining experiences await you at each destination

The entertainment options offered on APT’s river cruises are generally more relaxed and intimate than the options on their ocean cruises, because the focus is so much on the destinations themselves. Having said that, your river cruise will not be boring. APT will often invite local entertainers onboard, including singers, dancers, performers, and live music is always a highlight onboard. In addition to this, you can also take part in unique, hands-on experiences such as glass-blowing and silk-making, or attend destination presentations led by your Cruise Director or a historian. These presentations are designed to help you fully immerse in your destination and deepen your appreciation for what see and experience onshore.

The entertainment options offered on APT’s ocean and small ship cruises will vary depending on the ship that has been chartered. On larger ocean-going ships, you may find broadway style entertainment, live performances, and more; while on smaller expedition ships, you’ll typically find the entertainment is once again destination-focused.

Facilities and Amenities

Facilities and amenities vary by cruise type and ship. Most river ships will have a library, lounge spaces to relax, a heated pool and whirlpool, a spa and salon, boutique shops, and bicycles to use during shore excursions. Ocean and expedition ships will vary by ship size. Please ask your Cruise Travel Advisor for information specific to the cruise ship and/or itinerary you are interested in.

Insider Tip

With its core market being Australian cruisers, APT’s river cruise itineraries tend to be longer than the seven-day average of the industry. Taking in to account the long travel distance Australians have to get pretty much anywhere else in the world, this makes APT the perfect option for those who want to maximise their time and enjoy a longer cruise holiday. One of the most popular is a 14-night sailing from Amsterdam to Budapest (or in the reverse), and a 23-night journey that takes in 23 destinations, including land-based hotel stays in Berlin, Paris, and Prague.

Cruising with Children

APT does not recommend children under the age of 12 years for their tours and cruises. Their river cruises do not offer specific child-oriented amenities or shore excursions, while their ocean and expedition itineraries are focused on destinations that generally geared towards an adult passenger base. If you are interested in an APT cruise for your family, please ask your Cruise Travel Advisor for their recommendations.

On Shore Experiences

APT’s “Freedom of Choice” shore excursions provide you with the opportunity to cherry pick from a range of options to suit your own interests, tastes, and preferneces. You can mix-and-match from a wide selection of cultural, culinary, active, and nature-based experiences, to create your own ideal itinerary. And best of all, they’re all included in your fare. APT also offers one-of-a-kind “Signature Experiences” that are about deepening your connection to the destination and offering you a truly unique experience. This curated collection of events is not usually available to regular travellers.

For example, in Europe, you could indulge in cultural delights such as attending a classical concert at City Palace in Vienna, discovering the enchanting Namedy Castle, or enjoying a sumptuous lunch at the 17th-century Chateau Neercanne. In Australia, you can sip bubbly at the ‘Tip of Australia’ on Cape York, meet the charismatic wild dolphins of Monkey Mia, explore the pristine beauty of Freycinet National Park in Tasmania while cruising along the breathtaking Wineglass Bay, or challenge yourself with the exhilarating Kings Canyon Rim Walk. And in Egypt you can be guided through the fascinating ruins of Memphis and the legendary step pyramids of Sakkara, with the guidance of your personal Egyptologist.

With APT, embrace the freedom of choice and create the intinerary of your dreams.

APT strives to ensure that all of their guests have a comfortable and seamless journey, including those with mobility challenges and other disabilities. Their river cruise ships are thoughtfully designed to accommodate compact collapsible wheelchairs, and their newer ships offer electric doorways to allow wheelchair-dependent guests to effortlessly open and close doors with a simple touch of a button.

Many of their European vessels have spacious cabins that are specifically designed to facilitate easy access, including wider doorways. Guests will also find lifts on most ships, making it convenient for guests to transition between different areas of the ship. However, on most of APT’s river ships, you may find the sun deck is only accessible by stairs.

When it comes to shore excursions, APT is dedicated to providing a gentle style of touring that is suitable for guests with mobility restrictions, however, certain European cities and villages may present challenges due to uneven terrain and cobblestones.

Accessibility on APT’s ocean and expedition ships will vary by cruise line, depending on which ship APT has chartered. Please ask your Cruise Travel Advisor for more details based on your itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a dress code on APT’s river cruises?

The dress code is “casual and comfortable” by day, and smart-casual for dinner. Passengers are not allowed to wear swimwear in the restaurant and lounges, and shorts are not considered suitable attire for dinner. Besides this, comfort is always front of mind. And, remember to pack comfortable shoes for the shore excursions, as many of them involve a lot of walking!

Where do I embark my river cruise?

Due to the nature of river cruising, port details are subject to change. APT advises checking your port details within seven days of your sailing, and then again as close as possible to your departure in case of any last minute changes.

Does APT offer flexibility to change my travel plans?

Flexibility and freedom of choice underpins everything APT does, so yes, they offer flexible bookinbg policies that allow you to cancel and/or move your holiday to another time. You can choose to add on their “Deposit Cancellation Peace of Mind” policy which allows you to cancel your trip up to 100 days prior to departure (Terms and Conditions apply), and you even have the option to hold your place on a cruise for up to seven days without paying a deposit so that you have time to make up your mind. Just ask your Cruise Travel Advisor for more information if you need it.
