EXPLORE NORWAY BY CRUISE

Norway is one of the world’s great cruise destinations. Sail deep into Norwegian fjords carved by ancient glaciers, watch the Northern Lights dance above the Arctic Circle in winter, or witness the Midnight Sun at midnight in summer. Every season delivers something completely different.

A Norway cruise takes you to remote coastlines, Viking history and landscapes that most people only ever see in photographs. Whether you’re drawn to the fjords, the Aurora Borealis or simply somewhere unlike anywhere else on earth, cruising is the best way to see it all without the hassle of constant repacking.

Our Cruise Advisors know these waters, they’ve sailed them. Talk to an expert and we’ll match you with the right ship, the right season and the right Norway cruise itinerary for your travel style and budget.

CRUISE SEASON IN NORWAY

Norway’s cruise season runs year-round, with each season offering something distinct.

Summer (June–August): Peak fjord season. Extended daylight hours, ideal sailing conditions and the Midnight Sun north of the Arctic Circle. The most popular time to sail Norway.
Winter (December–February): Northern Lights season. Cold temperatures and long nights create the best conditions for Aurora Borealis viewing above the Arctic Circle.
Spring (March–May): Snowmelt feeds the waterfalls, wildflowers appear along the trails and crowds are well below summer levels. One of the best times for a Norwegian fjords cruise.
Autumn (September–November): Quieter, more affordable and still beautiful. Landscapes stay vivid through October and prices drop noticeably from the summer peak.
Spring and autumn offer the best balance of scenery and value, while summer and winter each deliver their own unmissable natural event.

MSC Cruises — Regularly deploys ships from Hamburg, Copenhagen and Southampton for Northern European sailings, giving Australians flexible joining options at strong value.
Royal Caribbean International — A great choice for active travellers who want a port-packed itinerary and plenty of onboard entertainment. Larger ships, broad port call lists and adventurous shore excursion options.
Celebrity Cruises — A more premium experience with a focus on modern luxury, wellness and gastronomy. Well suited to couples or groups wanting a refined way to see the Norwegian coast.

HIGHLIGHTS OF NORWAY

Norway rewards the curious traveller at every stop. The fjords are the headline act: Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord are both UNESCO World Heritage listed, with sheer cliff walls, cascading waterfalls and almost no development on the banks. Seeing them from the deck of a ship is something photographs genuinely cannot prepare you for.

Further north, the Lofoten Islands rise jagged from the sea, with colourful fishing villages and some of Norway’s most striking scenery. Further still, Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago is polar bear territory, raw, remote and only reachable on specialist expedition sailings. Add Bergen’s medieval waterfront, Oslo’s Viking history and Tromsø’s position as the Arctic’s prime Northern Lights base, and Norway delivers depth at every port.

Key Ports to Visit

⚓ Bergen, Norway

The natural gateway to the Norwegian fjords and the most common starting point for Norway cruise itineraries. The colourful wooden houses of the Bryggen wharf have stood since the 14th century. Take the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen for the view that sells Norway to every first-timer who sees it.

⚓ Oslo, Norway

Norway’s capital rewards a full day ashore. The Viking Ship Museum, Vigeland Sculpture Park and the waterfront Opera House cover the historical and the contemporary in a walkable, compact city that blends Viking heritage with modern Scandinavian design.

⚓ Tromsø, Norway

Norway’s gateway to the Arctic and the prime target for Northern Lights hunters between September and April. In summer it switches to the Midnight Sun. Shore excursion highlights include dog sledding, whale watching and the Polar Museum depending on season.

⚓ Ålesund, Norway

One of Norway’s most photogenic town centres, rebuilt in Art Nouveau style after a fire in 1904. Ålesund is the main access point for Geirangerfjord, one of the most dramatic sections of the Norwegian fjord system — and a highlight of any Western Norway itinerary.

⚓ Spitsbergen (Svalbard), Norway

Only accessible on specialist expedition sailings, Spitsbergen is Norway’s most remote destination. Polar bears outnumber humans on Svalbard. Glaciers, tundra and Arctic wildlife including walrus and Arctic fox are the landscape here. Talk to a Cruiseabout advisor about expedition options if this is on your radar.

Weather

Norway’s coastal climate is moderated by the Gulf Stream, keeping it warmer than you’d expect at this latitude. Coastal areas are mild and wet in winter with mountain snowfall nearby. The fjord region is famously unpredictable, with sun, rain and wind in the same afternoon is normal at any time of year. Dress in layers and you’ll be well prepared.

Northern Norway above the Arctic Circle operates on a different calendar entirely, such as polar night in winter and Midnight Sun in summer, with both worth experiencing at least once.

Before you sail, make sure you’re travel-ready. Our Cruising Essentials Pack covers everything you need to sort before departure.

Insider Tip

Rising with the sun may not seem enticing, especially after enjoying the long bright evenings, but watching day break while sailing along the fjords is worth every lost minute of sleep. It’s a truly magical experience, one that you might even have all to yourself if your fellow passengers stay snug in their cabins. So, set your alarm, prepare yourself a hot cup of coffee and prepare yourself for an unforgettable sailing experience in Norway.

Equally beautiful is a sunset pretty much anywhere in Norway. It’s a truly exceptional moment of tranquility and natural beauty.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO CRUISE NORWAY?

The best time depends on what you want to see. June to August delivers peak fjord conditions and the Midnight Sun. December to February is the prime window for the Northern Lights above the Arctic Circle. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer fewer crowds, lower prices and excellent scenery, often the best choice for Australians looking for value without compromising on experience.

WHAT IS A NORWEGIAN FJORDS CRUISE?

A Norwegian fjords cruise navigates the deep glacial inlets that cut through Norway’s western coastline. The most famous are Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord, both UNESCO World Heritage listed. Ships sail between sheer cliff walls, past waterfalls and into remote villages only accessible by water. Most Norwegian fjord cruises depart from Bergen, Oslo, Southampton, Copenhagen or Hamburg.

HOW LONG ARE NORWAY CRUISES?

Most Norway cruise itineraries run 7 to 14 nights. Longer sailings of 14 to 21 nights typically combine Norway with other Northern European destinations like Iceland, the British Isles or Scandinavia. Speak to a Cruiseabout advisor to find the right duration for your timeframe and budget.

CAN I SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS ON A NORWAY CRUISE?

Northern Lights sightings are not guaranteed, they depend on solar activity and clear skies. The best conditions are dark nights above the Arctic Circle between September and March. Tromsø, the Lofoten Islands and Spitsbergen are the top regions for Aurora Borealis sightings. Winter itineraries are planned specifically around this.

SHOULD I CHOOSE WESTERN OR EASTERN NORWAY ITINERARIES?

Western Norway itineraries focus on the fjords — Geirangerfjord, Nærøyfjord, Bergen and Ålesund are the highlights. Northern or expedition itineraries include Tromsø and Spitsbergen, better suited to Northern Lights or Midnight Sun seekers. Your Cruiseabout advisor can help you choose based on season and what you want to experience.

CAN I CRUISE NORWAY FROM AUSTRALIA?

Most Australian travellers fly into a European embarkation port, typically Bergen, Oslo, Southampton, Copenhagen or Hamburg, and join their cruise there. Cruiseabout’s CruisePlus packages combine your international flights, pre-cruise hotel stay and cruise into one booking, removing the complexity from your planning.

CAN I EARN WORLD360 REWARDS POINTS ON A NORWAY CRUISE?

Yes. Eligible Norway cruise bookings made through Cruiseabout earn World360 Rewards points. Speak to your Cruise Advisor or check the World360 Rewards terms for full details on earning and redeeming points on your booking.
