Star Collector: Greenland Fjords, Canadian Maritimes

Reykjavik, on the coast of Iceland, is the country’s capital and largest city. It’s home to the National and Saga museums, tracing Iceland’s Viking history. The striking concrete Hallgrimskirkja church and rotating Perlan glass dome offer sweeping views of the sea and nearby hills. Exemplifying the island’s volcanic activity is the geothermal Blue Lagoon spa, near the village of Grindavik.

The Prince Christian Sound is a waterway in Southern Greenland. It separates the mainland from Sammisoq and other islands of the Cape Farewell Archipelago near the southernmost tip of Greenland. The name was given in honour of the prince, later king Christian VIII of Denmark.

Qaqortoq is a town in southern Greenland, set within a system of fjords. The town center is home to 18th-century colonial buildings and a landmark fountain. Qaqortoq Museum features displays about Greenlandic culture. From Lake Tasersuaq, trails lead through rugged mountains to the old Norse settlement of Igaliku. To the southeast, the hot springs at Uunartoq sit beside a bay dotted with icebergs.

Narsaq is a town in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland. The name Narsaq is Kalaallisut for “Plain”, referring to the shore of Tunulliarfik Fjord where the town is located.

Nanortalik, formerly Nennortalik, is a town in Nanortalik Island, Kujalleq municipality, southern Greenland. With 1,185 inhabitants as of 2020, it is the eleventh-largest town in the country. The name Nanortalik means “Place of Polar Bears” or “Place Where the Polar Bears Go”.

St. Anthony is a town on the northern reaches of the Great Northern Peninsula of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. St. Anthony serves as a main service centre for northern Newfoundland and southern Labrador. St. Anthony had a population of 2,258 in 2016.

Woody Point is a town located in the heart of Gros Morne National Park, on the western coast of Newfoundland. Situated on Bonne Bay, the Town of Woody Point encompasses three areas: Curzon Village, Woody Point and Winterhouse Brook. It has a total population of 281 residents.

Bar Harbor is a town on Mount Desert Island along Maine’s Frenchman Bay. It serves as a gateway to the mountains and cliffs of neighboring Acadia National Park. Towering over the park, Cadillac Mountain has trails and views of the town, the bay and the Cranberry Islands. Sand Beach is ringed by mountains. From the town pier, the Shore Path winds along the bay overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the Porcupine Islands.
