YOUR ITINERARY
Arrive in Japan’s dynamic capital and embark your vessel. Explore the city’s iconic landmarks, ancient shrines and vibrant neighbourhoods — where centuries-old temples sit in the shadow of towering skyscrapers.
...A second day to immerse yourself in Tokyo. Admire the city’s breathtaking skyline from one of its famous observation decks, experience the refined world of geisha arts, or simply lose yourself in the energy of Shibuya and Shinjuku.
...A sea day heading north through the Pacific Ocean as Viking Neptune leaves Tokyo behind and makes for Hokkaido. Japan’s eastern coastline is visible to the west and the Pacific stretches east to the horizon. August in these waters means warm, clear days and the ship’s Aquavit Terrace and The Pool are both at their finest. The onboard enrichment lecture programme — likely covering Hokkaido’s distinctive Ainu indigenous culture ahead of tomorrow’s Sapporo call — is worth attending today. The World Cafe and The Restaurant are both excellent for a first sea day.
...Gateway to Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, Tomakomai offers a peaceful contrast to the bustle of Tokyo. Explore vibrant parklands, soak in natural mineral hot springs, and discover the wide-open landscapes that make this region unique.
...A brand-new port of call for Viking. Venture inland to the magnificent Hirosaki Castle, one of Japan’s finest surviving feudal fortresses, steeped in centuries of samurai heritage and surrounded by stunning natural scenery.
...Another first for Viking, Niigata offers a fascinating window into traditional Japanese culture. Witness the graceful performing arts of geisha, or explore the storied past of Shibata Castle — a proud symbol of the region’s samurai history.
...A sea day crossing the Sea of Japan, one of the world’s most historically significant bodies of water, linking Japan and the Korean Peninsula in a crossing that has shaped trade, culture and conflict for centuries. The warm Tsushima Current flows north through the sea and the water temperature at this latitude in August is among the warmest in Viking Neptune’s annual range. The Nordic Spa, the Explorers’ Lounge and the Torshavn bar are all excellent companions for a day this warm and this calm. Busan arrives tomorrow and the destination briefing on the city’s 17 centuries of history and its distinct character from Seoul is worth attending today.
...Explore one of Asia’s great port cities, where 17 centuries of history unfold across colourful hillside villages, bustling local markets, scenic coastal parks and beautiful beaches. Don’t miss the extraordinary clifftop Haedong Yonggungsa Temple.
...One of Japan’s oldest and most vibrant cities, Fukuoka is a feast for the senses. Visit the sacred Kushida Shrine, marvel at the iconic Fukuoka Tower, and enjoy a scenic sail through the dramatic Kanmon Straits — the narrow waters linking Kitakyūshū to the Inland Sea.
...A place of profound historical significance, Hiroshima is also a city of extraordinary resilience and hope. Visit the moving Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum, and reflect on the city’s remarkable decades-long restoration.
...A sea day heading east through the Pacific as Viking Neptune completes her circumnavigation of Japan and heads toward Osaka and Shimizu. The voyage is in its final stages and the Pacific has a particular quality at this latitude in late August — warm, deep blue and entirely undisturbed. The onboard destination briefing on Kyoto, the alternative from Osaka that most passengers will choose tomorrow, is worth attending today. The Explorers’ Lounge forward observation area gives the finest sea view on the ship for a contemplative day like this.
...Japan’s culinary capital and a city of boundless energy. Explore ancient shrines, imperial history and the legendary street food of Dotonbori. Alternatively, venture to nearby Kyoto — home to some of Japan’s most treasured temples, gardens and geisha districts.
...Perfectly positioned at the foot of Mt. Fuji, Shimizu is one of Japan’s most scenic ports. Take in breathtaking views of the iconic peak, explore the pine-lined Miho Peninsula, and discover the natural beauty of this stunning coastal city.
...A second day to explore the riches of Shimizu. Visit lush hillside tea plantations, walk in the foothills of Mt. Fuji, and marvel at the cascading Shiraito Falls — a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
...Return to Tokyo to disembark and journey home — or extend your adventure with a post-cruise stay in this extraordinary city, or venture further afield with Viking’s fully guided Spirit of Mongolia extension.
