Your Pacific adventure begins in one of the world’s great harbour cities. Four languid days at sea as Celebrity Solstice crosses the Tasman and heads north into the tropics. This is ocean cruising at its purest – the horizon unbroken in every direction, the temperature rising with each passing day, the ship’s restaurants, spa and pool deck yours to enjoy at leisure. By the time Fiji appears, you will be thoroughly and happily at sea.

A second sea day and Celebrity Solstice is heading north through the Coral Sea. The Australian coast is behind and the first traces of the tropics are visible in the water temperature and the changing sky. The Lawn Club, the Solarium and the Silk Harvest restaurant are all excellent companions for a warm sea day heading toward Fiji.

Four days at sea and the Pacific has fully claimed the ship. The horizon is unbroken in every direction, the trade winds are beginning to make themselves felt and the colour of the water has shifted from the deep blue of the open Tasman to the warmer turquoise of the tropical Pacific. Fiji is 24 hours away.

A final sea day before Lautoka arrives tomorrow. The tropical air is warm and humid, the sea is calm and the Cellar Masters wine bar and the Murano reservation for tonight are both worth attending to. Fiji in spring means the rainy season is ending and the island is at its most vivid.

Fiji announces itself with vivid colour – the lush green of the cane fields behind Lautoka, the warmth of the welcome, the scent of tropical flowers drifting across the wharf. An extended stay until 10:00 PM gives you a full day and evening to explore Fiji’s second city, venture into the surrounding countryside, or simply find a beach and let the island work its magic.

Fiji’s capital is a vibrant, characterful city with a lot more to offer than its size suggests. The Municipal Market is one of the South Pacific’s best – a riot of tropical produce, fresh fish and local crafts – while the Fiji Museum tells the story of a Pacific culture of remarkable depth and resilience. A restful day at sea between Fiji and Samoa, the Pacific settling into its vast, warm self around the ship. The pool deck, the spa, a long lunch – time to reflect on Fiji and look forward to what comes next.

An extraordinary day even by the standards of this voyage. Celebrity Solstice calls at both Pago Pago in American Samoa and Apia in independent Samoa, crossing the International Date Line between the two. Pago Pago is one of the most dramatically beautiful harbours in the Pacific, a deep volcanic bay surrounded by jungle peaks that drop sheer to the water’s edge and give the port a scale and drama unlike anything in the central Pacific. The National Park of American Samoa, accessible from the town, protects one of the last remaining areas of paleotropical rainforest in the US national park system. The crossing of the International Date Line between the two ports adds a moment of calendar curiosity to the day. Apia, the capital of independent Samoa, is warm, relaxed and genuinely charming: the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum at Vailima, where the author of Treasure Island spent his final years and is buried on the hill above, is the finest single cultural site on the island. The Papaseea Sliding Rocks natural water slides and the To Sua Ocean Trench, a deep swimming hole accessible by ladder through tropical gardens, are both excellent afternoon options before the ship departs at 6pm.

Five glorious days at sea across the open Pacific – the longest stretch of ocean cruising in this itinerary and, for many, the highlight. A second day of open Pacific crossing as Celebrity Solstice heads northeast toward Hawaii. The Samoan islands are gone below the horizon and nothing but ocean stretches in every direction. The Connoisseur Club’s cognac selection and the Sunset Bar at dusk are both excellent for a mid-crossing evening.

Three sea days remaining and the Pacific is at its most elemental. Flying fish are visible from the upper decks in the morning, skimming the surface in silver arcs. The Cellar Masters wine programme, the Murano restaurant for a special occasion dinner and the Sky Observation Lounge for the evening are all worth considering today.

Hawaii is two days away. The trade winds that have accompanied Celebrity Solstice across the Pacific are beginning to carry a different quality of air as the ship moves into the latitude of the Hawaiian islands. The Hot Glass Show runs this afternoon on the Lawn Club and is one of the most genuinely unusual onboard experiences available at sea.

A final sea day and Diamond Head will appear on the horizon tomorrow morning. Fifteen nights from Sydney to this moment have covered 5,000 nautical miles of open Pacific and three island cultures. Tonight is worth a reservation at Tuscan Grill or Murano for a proper farewell to the crossing.
