YOUR ITINERARY
Arrive in the Finnish capital and make your way to the group hotel located right at Helsinki airport. (The hotel is included in your Charter Flight & Hotel Package.) You will have the rest of the day to explore the many museums, galleries and restaurants, relax at a Finnish sauna or wander the vibrant Design District. If you do plan to visit Helsinki city centre, take advantage of the convenient, 40-minute rail service from the airport.
...This morning, the group will transfer to the airport and board our private charter flight to Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen’s largest settlement.
...Sailing north into Krossfjorden, you’ll witness some of Spitsbergen’s most dramatic glacier calving as the highly active Lilliehöök Glacier sends chunks of ice crashing into the fjord below. A Zodiac excursion to Ny-London, an abandoned early 20th-century mining settlement, offers a guided walk through Arctic history. Svalbard reindeer are often spotted in this area.
...Wake to the sight of the Monaco Glacier, one of Spitsbergen’s most prolific iceberg-producing glaciers. Your Expedition Team will scan the shoreline and ice edge for marine mammals throughout the day. Possible landings include Texas Bar, Worsleyneset and Alicehamna, each offering a different perspective on the High Arctic landscape.
...At Smeerenburg, you’ll step ashore at the remains of a Dutch whaling settlement that dates back nearly 400 years – one of the most northerly outposts in 17th-century Europe. The afternoon brings Magdalenefjorden, where snow-capped mountains and massive glaciers are reflected in crystal-clear waters, one of the most photographed fjords in the archipelago.
...The day’s highlight is Alkhornet, where towering cliffs shelter thousands of nesting seabirds including fulmars and Brünnich’s guillemots. Reindeer are regularly spotted on the slopes above. In the evening, gather with your fellow expeditioners for the captain’s farewell dinner – a fitting close to four days in one of the world’s great wilderness destinations. Please note this is an expedition voyage and exact route will vary based on weather and opportunity.
...Your adventure ends in the frontier-style settlement of Longyearbyen. From here, transfer to the airport for your return group charter flight to Helsinki, included in the Charter Flight & Hotel Package. Upon arrival in Helsinki, you’ll transfer to your included hotel for the night.
