This 12-night journey starts with a night in Venice before Norwegian Viva sails south through the Adriatic. The first ports set the tone: Ravenna’s Byzantine mosaics, Dubrovnik’s walled old city and the mountain-backed bay of Kotor before the ship crosses into the Aegean.
From Athens and the Acropolis to the clifftop villages of Santorini, the ancient ruins of Ephesus at Kusadasi and the fortified medieval streets of Rhodes, the Greek and Turkish ports give you the kind of history that takes days to process. Thessaloniki adds a second Greek city with a very different character — Byzantine churches, a Roman forum and one of the best food scenes in the country.
The voyage ends with two nights in Istanbul, giving you time to take in the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar without rushing.

YOUR ITINERARY
Welcome to Venice. You have 1 night to explore the city.
...Along the northeast coast of Italy is where you’ll discover the historic town of Ravenna. Once a thriving seaport in ancient times (it now lies five miles inland), Ravenna was also the westernmost pillar of the Byzantine Empire. Just as everyone who visits, you too will marvel at the exquisite Byzantine mosaics. At first glance the old streets, peaceful squares and fine shops resemble any other Italian city, but the Byzantine domes of its churches still evoke its Eastern heritage. As an added bonus, Ravenna is a great place to taste the famously delicious food of the Emilia-Romagna region.
...Despite the magnificent 13th century walls that surround the city, Dubrovnik is one of the most welcoming cruise destinations in all of Europe. Dubbed “the pearl of the Adriatic” by the poet, Lord Byron, this Croatian city exudes romantic charm and beautiful scenery with its shimmering marble streets, centuries-old buildings capped by bright orange roofs, and lovely beaches ensconced between awesome rocky ledges. Explore more of Dubrovnik on a European cruise!
...Tucked away between the mountains and the Bay of Kotor, one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea, is where you’ll find the picturesque town of Kotor. As you arrive at this secluded city, you’ll notice the dramatic 65-foot high protective walls, which date back to the Venetian period during the 9th century. Stroll the labyrinth of cobbled streets with cozy cafes and craft shops as you marvel the graceful old buildings. Listed as a UNESCO World Natural and Historical Heritage Site, Kotor is also world-famous as a premier yachting and sailing destination.
...This is the cradle of civilization, the oldest city in Europe. Not only is this city home to the Acropolis and some of the most important architectural structures and archaeological finds in the Western world, It is also a very modern city, an urban amalgam of extraordinary art, culture, cuisine and shopping. Explore more of Athens on a European cruise!
...Whitewashed villages clinging to the sides of the sea cliffs have made the volcanic island of Santorini one of the most widely photographed places in the world. The island’s charm and subtle mystery have even made it a target of speculation as the location of the lost city of Atlantis.
...This Greek island just off the coast of Turkey exudes beauty and history. Take a walking tour of the old fortified city and stand in awe of the impressive Grand Master’s Palace. See where the Colossus of Rhodes, a onetime Wonder of the World, once stood and savour the charm of this remarkable walled town. Along the scenic coast lies the whitewashed town of Lindos with its ancient acropolis and stunning views.
...Take a journey into the past in richly historic Ephesus. Once an ancient Greek city, Kusadasi was known for the famed Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Built, destroyed, and rebuilt again through several notably historical periods, Ephesus boasts abounding ruins and archaeological excavation sites. View what remains of the Roman Library of Celsus, the Gate of Augustus, the Tomb of John the Apostle, and the Basilica of St. John, among several other ancient remnants.
...Touring the impressive historic sites of Thessaloniki is akin to rolling back history to the times of sweeping empires, mighty fortresses and imposing palaces. Dating back to 315 BC, the city is considered the cultural hub of Greece. Weaved in among the ancient ruins are vibrant streets lined with a diverse selection of delicious restaurants, boutique shops, popular festivals and beautiful beaches and scenic views of the sea. Whether you’re looking to dive into the region’s storied past, explore the modern-day culture or soak in its natural beauty, Thessaloniki truly offers something for everyone.
...Few cities carry as much history as Istanbul. Once the capital of both the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, the city holds an extraordinary concentration of monuments within walking distance of each other. The Hagia Sophia has been a cathedral, a mosque and a museum across its 1,500-year history. The Blue Mosque sits directly opposite. The Topkapi Palace, home to Ottoman sultans for four centuries, overlooks the Bosphorus from the old city’s highest point. The Grand Bazaar covers 61 streets and has been trading continuously since 1461.
...A second day in Istanbul is best spent away from the main monuments. Cross the Galata Bridge to Beyoglu on the European side, where the 14th century Galata Tower anchors a neighbourhood of independent restaurants, music venues and rooftop bars. Or take a Bosphorus ferry across to the Asian side for a completely different pace — Kadikoy’s street food market and waterfront are worth the crossing alone.
