The Rhine doesn’t need an introduction. It’s the river that put European river cruising on the map, and the stretch from Amsterdam to Basel covers more concentrated history, wine and scenery than almost any other waterway on the continent.
Amsterdam starts it gently, a day on the canals before the river takes over. Cologne follows, its cathedral visible from the water long before you dock. Then the Rhine Gorge, where the cliffs rise 120 metres above the river and the ruins of medieval castles mark every bend. Rüdesheim sits in the middle of some of Germany’s best wine country. Strasbourg gives you France without leaving the river, its Gothic cathedral and the timber-framed lanes of La Petite France a full afternoon’s worth. The journey ends near Basel, with the Black Forest on one side and the Alsatian plain on the other.
It’s a route that changes with the season. Spring brings strawberry picking and the first green on the vines. Summer fills the riverbanks with festivals. Autumn turns the gorge golden and opens the cellar doors.
