YOUR ITINERARY
Welcome to Darwin — the gateway to your Kimberley expedition. Check into your 4-star hotel and start exploring the tropical Top End capital. The Darwin Waterfront precinct has excellent restaurants, a wave lagoon, and stunning sunset views. If you arrive early, the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and its Cyclone Tracy exhibit are well worth a visit.
...Your second day in Darwin is perfect for a day trip to Litchfield National Park — swim in the crystal-clear plunge pools beneath Florence Falls and Wangi Falls, see the towering magnetic termite mounds, and cool off in some of the Territory’s most beautiful natural swimming holes. Back in town, Crocosaurus Cove and the Mindil Beach Sunset Market are both Darwin essentials.
...Transfer to port and board Coral Geographer for your 10-night expedition. Meet the expedition team, attend the Captain’s welcome briefing, and settle into the relaxed atmosphere of a 120-guest expedition ship. As you sail out of Darwin Harbour past the mangrove-lined coast, the Kimberley adventure begins.
...An unforgettable start to the Kimberley — the tallest twin waterfalls in the region plunge over 80 metres down sheer sandstone cliffs into the gorge below. You’ll approach by Zodiac through the narrow King George River, red cliff faces towering on either side, with the thundering falls ahead. It’s one of the most dramatic natural sights in Australia and sets the tone for the expedition.
...The Kimberley holds some of the world’s oldest and most significant rock art — Wandjina spirit figures and the enigmatic Gwion Gwion (Bradshaw) paintings that are estimated to be tens of thousands of years old. Your expedition team and cultural guides will take you by Zodiac to access galleries hidden in sandstone overhangs along the coast, bringing the art and its cultural significance to life in a way no guidebook can.
...Venturing offshore into the Timor Sea, Ashmore Reef is one of Australia’s most remote marine protected areas — a pristine coral atoll that supports an extraordinary diversity of marine life including sea turtles, reef sharks, manta rays, and vast seabird colonies. Snorkelling here feels like exploring an untouched aquarium. Very few Kimberley itineraries include Ashmore, making this a genuine expedition highlight.
...Even more remote than Ashmore, Scott Reef is a pair of coral atolls sitting in the open Indian Ocean, roughly 400 kilometres from the nearest landfall. The water clarity is extraordinary and the reef system is virtually untouched — snorkel over pristine hard corals, giant clams, and schools of tropical fish in water so clear it feels like floating in air. This is frontier expedition cruising at its most authentic.
...One of the Kimberley’s most astonishing natural phenomena — as the tide recedes, this massive reef system appears to rise from the ocean, with seawater cascading off its surface in every direction. From the Zodiacs, you’ll spot turtles, reef sharks, manta rays, and dugongs feeding in the channels. It’s a spectacle that’s impossible to fully capture on camera — you need to see it to believe it.
...Witness the rushing waters of Horizontal Falls on Zodiac tenders, classed among the most incredible natural wonders. Then cruise the rugged Buccaneer Archipelago, visiting the Iron Islands before enjoying sunset drinks aboard the ship.
...A low-lying chain of sandy islands that form one of the most important seabird and marine turtle nesting sites in the Indian Ocean. Tens of thousands of brown boobies, terns, and frigatebirds nest here, and the surrounding waters are rich with green and flatback turtles. Your expedition team will guide observation from the Zodiacs to minimise disturbance to the nesting colonies.
...The Rowley Shoals are three coral atolls rising from the continental shelf approximately 300 kilometres west of Broome — among the most pristine and untouched reef systems on the planet. The water visibility here can exceed 50 metres, and the coral diversity is staggering. Snorkel over gardens of staghorn and plate coral, spot reef sharks patrolling the drop-offs, and experience marine wilderness that very few people ever get to see.
...A second day at the Rowley Shoals gives you the chance to explore different sections of the atoll system. Conditions permitting, the expedition team will take you to multiple snorkel sites — each with its own character, from shallow coral gardens teeming with angelfish and butterflyfish to deeper channels where larger pelagic species cruise past. Two days here is a rare privilege that few expedition itineraries offer.
...Arrive into Broome after 10 unforgettable days exploring the Kimberley and its offshore frontiers. Transfer to your 4-star hotel and spend the evening on Cable Beach — the 22 kilometres of white sand backed by red pindan cliffs are the perfect place to reflect on the expedition over a sunset drink.
...A full day to explore this unique pearling town at the edge of the outback. Visit the Pearl Luggers museum to learn about Broome’s remarkable pearling history, browse the galleries of Chinatown, and sample some of the freshest seafood in Western Australia. If conditions are right, the Staircase to the Moon phenomenon at Town Beach is an unmissable natural light show.
...Your Kimberley expedition comes to an end. If time allows before your flight, a final walk along Cable Beach or a coffee at one of Broome’s laid-back cafes is the perfect way to close out an extraordinary journey through Australia’s last great wilderness.
