Freedom at Sea: A First-Hand Norwegian Cruise Line Experience
Cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line is all about one thing: freedom. Freedom to dine when you want, dress how you like and shape each day around your own rhythm. It’s a style of cruising that feels relaxed, energetic and refreshingly unstructured and one that Cruiseabout Travel Advisor Tracey Jarman experienced firsthand while sailing the Mexican Riviera.
From the moment Tracey stepped onboard, it was clear this was a cruise designed for travellers who want variety, energy and choice without sacrificing comfort or quality. Sailing during Halloween and Mexico’s vibrant Day of the Dead celebrations only added to the atmosphere, bringing colour, music and personality to both the ship and the ports visited.
First Impressions: A Ship That Matches the Mood
Norwegian Cruise Line ships are designed to feel lively and social, with open spaces that invite guests to move, mingle and explore. Onboard, the mood was upbeat and festive, with themed decorations and events creating a sense that something was always happening.
“There was such a fun vibe onboard,” Tracey shared. “With the themed celebrations and the sheer number of spaces to explore, we were never bored.”
One of her favourite places to retreat was the Observation Lounge, a signature NCL space with floor-to-ceiling windows and sweeping ocean views. It offered a quieter contrast to the buzz elsewhere onboard, perfect for a coffee, a book or a relaxed catch-up with friends while watching the world drift by.

Entertainment That Keeps the Energy High
Entertainment is a cornerstone of the Norwegian Cruise Line experience, and Tracey was genuinely impressed by the quality and variety on offer. Each evening brought a new option from large-scale productions to live music and interactive shows.
The standout performances included ICONS, a high-energy production celebrating legendary artists like Dolly Parton, Billy Joel, Elton John, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, as well as a world-class performance of Jersey Boys, which earned a standing ovation from the audience.
And then there are the moments that only NCL can deliver.
“Where else can you race your friends on a two-level electric go-kart track in the middle of the ocean?” Tracey laughed.
This blend of headline entertainment and unexpected experiences is what gives Norwegian Cruise Line its distinctive edge.
Dining with Choice at the Centre
Dining on Norwegian Cruise Line reflects the brand’s Freestyle philosophy; flexible, varied and designed to fit around your day rather than dictate it. With multiple dining venues available, guests can keep things casual or enjoy a more elevated experience without fixed times or assigned seating.
Tracey’s standout meal was at Q Texas Smokehouse, part of NCL’s specialty dining offering.
“The BBQ platter was enormous, and the beef rib was sensational,” she said.“I’ve been to Texas, and this was spot on.”
Finding a favourite bar was easy too, with the Sugarcane Mojito Bar quickly becoming a go-to for its signature cocktails, a reminder that dining on NCL is as much about atmosphere as it is about food.
Activities That Invite You to Join In
Days onboard were just as engaging as nights, with an impressive range of activities designed to suit different moods and travel styles. From organised games and competitions to quieter spaces for downtime, guests could be as active, or as relaxed, as they liked. Tracey particularly enjoyed how easy it was to connect with other travellers through shared experiences.
“There’s a real social energy onboard,” she said. “People just get involved; it makes it so easy to meet others.”
For those who prefer a slower pace, there were plenty of places to step back from the action and enjoy the views, reinforcing NCL’s strength in offering choice without pressure.
Shore Experiences: Colour, Culture and Contrast
While life onboard delivered constant entertainment, stepping ashore added a deeper sense of place. Tracey joined a shore excursion in Ensenada that captured the colour and character of Mexico beautifully.
Highlights included visiting Bar Andaluz, rumoured to be the birthplace of the margarita, followed by a trip to La Bufadora, one of North America’s largest marine blowholes. The coastal scenery was dramatic, while the lively streets leading to the lookout were packed with shops, restaurants and local flavour.
“There was free time to explore, shop for souvenirs, taste tequila and grab lunch at an authentic taco hut,” Tracey recalled. “It was busy, colourful and so much fun.”
Service That Feels Genuinely Human
Service onboard consistently matched the ship’s upbeat personality. Tracey noted how friendly and approachable the crew were from singing waitstaff in the Garden Café to attentive Guest Services.
One small moment stood out: after reporting a lost pair of sunglasses at breakfast, they were returned to her just hours later.
“It really showed how helpful and on-the-ball the team is” she said.
Accommodation for Every Travel Style
One of Norwegian Cruise Line’s greatest strengths is its range of accommodation options. From Solo Studio cabins complete with access to an exclusive Studio Lounge, to family-friendly cabins and multi-berth staterooms, there’s something for almost every type of traveller.
Tracey also had the opportunity to view The Haven, NCL’s private, luxury enclave within the ship. With its own pool, sundeck, restaurant and lounge, The Haven offers a more secluded experience for guests who value privacy while still enjoying access to the ship’s full range of entertainment and dining.
“It really is like a ship within a ship,” she said. “Its perfect for guests who value privacy and the feel of small-ship cruising, whilst having access to all the amenities of a larger ship.”
