Falmouth is a town on the coast of Cornwall in southwest England. It’s known for its deep natural harbour on the Fal Estuary, and beaches like Swanpool and Gyllyngvase. The National Maritime Museum Cornwall has interactive galleries and a flotilla of model boats. On Pendennis Point, Pendennis Castle is a well-preserved 16th-century fortress built by Henry VIII. To the southwest, Trebah Garden has subtropical plants.

During the feast of All Saints in 1493, Christopher Columbus discovered this archipelago of nine islands that he named “The Saints”. Today, only two of them are inhabited. Terre de Haut, in the east, is dominated by the Morne Mire hill; at the summit stands Fort Napoleon, paying homage to the islands’ history. Pointe-à-Pitre is a city on the island of Grande-Terre, in Guadeloupe, a French-governed archipelago in the Caribbean. It’s known for its lively markets, like the Marché de la Darse, where fishermen sell their catch from boats at the harbor. Cafes and colonial homes cluster around the grassy Place de la Victoire.
