Juneau, Alaska

There are few state capitals as dramatic and remote as this isolated city nestled in the Alaskan wilderness. Juneau is glacier country, with 38 ice flows branching off from the main Juneau Icefield and carving out valleys in their path. The Taku Glacier carves deep into the mountains, creating a massive structure that is among the thickest in the world – almost a mile deep. Just 12 miles from downtown, the Mendenhall Glacier descends into its own lake and visitor center. This magnificent glacier stretches down from the Juneau Icefield, offering a breathtaking backdrop to the area’s stunning scenery. With 1,500 square miles of ice field to explore, one of the best ways to experience the grandeur of this epic ice sculpture is to take a thrilling sightseeing flight. Soar above the icy world that fills the rugged mountain peaks for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The wildlife in the Southeast Alaskan wilderness is just as captivating as the landscapes – bears roam the riverbanks, bald eagles survey the surroundings, and Pacific humpbacks migrate to feast on the krill-rich waters.

Skagway, Alaska

“North to Alaska” was the famous song sung by those seeking fortune in the goldmines of the Klondike, particularly in Skagway. The White Pass and Chilkoot Trails served as the gateways to the Yukon Territory during the gold rush. The influx of prospectors brought prosperity to Skagway, making it Alaska’s largest town by 1898 with a population of around 20,000. The town was bustling with hotels, saloons, dance halls, and gambling establishments, drawing in both Skagway residents and the 10,000 individuals residing in the neighboring tent city of Dyea. However, as the gold began to run out in 190, miners swiftly moved to Nome, leading to a decline in population. Today, Skagway has a population of less than 1,000, but it still retains the charm and history of the gold rush era in its downtown historic district, and visitors can still experience the remnants of this exciting time in Alaska’s history.

Sitka, Alaska

Sitka has a rich history dating back to its origins as a major Tlingit Indian village known as “Shee Atika,” which translates to “settlement on the outside of Shee,” referring to Baranof Island. In 1799, Alexander Baranof, the general manager of the Russian American Company, relocated his operations from Kodiak to what is now Old Sitka, 7.5 miles north of the present-day town, calling it St. Archangel Michael. However, the Tlingit Indians resisted the Russian occupation, leading to a conflict in which the fort was burned and Russian settlers were massacred. Baranof returned in 1804, leading to the city being rebuilt on a new site known as New Archangel. For over six decades, New Archangel served as the Russian empire’s capital in Alaska until the territory became a financial burden and was sold to the United States in 1867. Sitka, formerly New Archangel, was renamed and became part of American territory. The city flourished until 1906 when the capital was shifted to Juneau due to the gold rush in the region. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Sitka became a significant naval base during World War II, experiencing a boom in population. However, with the war’s end, the city returned to a more peaceful setting. In 1959, Sitka saw economic growth with the construction of a pulp mill at Silver Bay by the Alaska Lumber and Pulp Company. Today, Sitka is known for its picturesque landscapes, fishing industry, and numerous historic attractions. It remains a charming city with a rich cultural heritage for visitors to explore and enjoy.

Hubbard Glacier, Alaska

Hubbard Glacier, located off the coast of Yakutat, Alaska, holds the title of being the largest glacier in North America. Stretching more than six miles wide, the calving front of this impressive glacier is a sight to behold. Originating 76 miles inland, one of the main sources for Hubbard Glacier showcases the breathtaking beauty of the Alaskan wilderness. This glacier has been incredibly active, undergoing two major surges in the past 30 years. Named after the esteemed Gardiner Greene Hubbard, a prominent U.S. lawyer, financier, and philanthropist, Hubbard Glacier stands as a majestic testament to the wonders of nature. Hubbard was also the first president of the National Geographic Society, a fitting honour for such an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon.
