This morning you will be met by your English-speaking guide for a half
day tour of Shanghai.
Start the day off at the old town of Shanghai, where cobbled streets are
lined with traditional shops selling herbal medicines, handicrafts,
Chinese tea and a variety of tantalising snacks. Here is the original
centre of Shanghai and for decades was the seat of Chinese authority in
Shanghai.
Continue to the Yu Gardens which is seen as one of the most perfect
examples of Chinese garden style. Built by the Ming-era governor, Pan
Yunduan, as a retirement gift for his father, the Yu Gardens is home to
exquisite jade rock, koi-filled ponds and stunning, tranquil pavilions.
Return to your hotel and the remainder of the day is at leisure.
Today, you will be met by your guide at your hotel and transferred to
Zhujiajiao, an ancient water village boasting old stone bridges, woodpanelled houses and numerous atmospheric waterways.
Along with the several other water towns in the region, it is referred to
as “The Venice of the East”. The town dates back around 1,700 years
and is probably the best-preserved water town in the region. Zhujiajiao
boasts in the region of 10,000 buildings dating from the Ming and Qing
Dynasties, although many have been adapted from their original usages.
Enjoy a tour of the town visiting North Street, which is lined with
ancient frontages, and Fangsheng Bridge, an ancient stone bridge built
in 1571.
Continue exploring this charming town at a leisurely walking pace,
soaking up the atmosphere and bargaining in local shops.
Lunch is included at a local restaurant.
After touring, you will be transferred back to Shanghai for an afternoon
at leisure.
This morning is free at leisure.
In the afternoon, explore Xintiandi which features the unique 1920s
style Shikumen (stone gate) buildings. This well-restored area, while
being historically important, is also a trendy quarter complete with
restaurants, bars and designer shops. When you walk into this area, you
will get the taste both of Shanghai in the 1920’s and the sonic modern
lifestyle of urbanites of the 21st century.
Continue to the Bund for a stroll and admire the magnificent colonial
architecture along this area, recognised as Shanghai’s former ‘Wall
Street’. The Bund is home to an impressive collection of buildings from
the early trade houses of the 1850s to the glamorous Art Deco
modernism of the 1920s. Originally the home of the foreign population
of Shanghai, the Bund’s architecture has inherited much western
influence and is a stark contrast to the Pudong skyline, sitting across the
Huangpu River.
Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
This evening, experience a leisurely cruise along the Huangpu River,
which flows through the centre of Shanghai and separates the city into
Pudong, meaning ‘east of the Huangpu’ and Puxi, ‘west of the Huangpu’.
Cruising down the river, you will see the contrast of the historical Bund
architecture on one side of the river with the modern Pudong skyline on
the other side. At night, the banks of the Huangpu light up, turning
Shanghai into a neon wonder
Today you will be transferred to Shanghai airport for your onward flight
