World's First Underwater Ship Lounge: Blue Eye by Ponant

Posted June 29th, 2017

There are features of Ponant’s new fleet of luxury yachts that may have you feeling as if you’re in a submarine. That is, if submarines had spacious designer lounges, huge, elliptical portholes and wall screens that played live footage of the surrounding ocean life.

Ponant’s Blue Eye will be the world’s first underwater ship lounge, a multi-sensory underwater space that offers an immersive experience unlike any other cruise ship in the world.

While seated in comfort at two or three metres below the surface, guests will be able to view the spectacle of dolphins playing in the bow waves, watch the shifting ocean landscape move past, and perhaps even glimpse that elusive giant of the deep, the blue whale. The vast portholes are fashioned in the shape of a whale’s eye in honour of this majestic creature.

The sounds of everyday sea life will be broadcast through specially designed hydrophones, which detect sound within a five kilometre radius of the ship. Guests are invited to recline in the Body Listening sofas, which discretely vibrate in tune with the marine soundwaves - it’s a total sensory experience.

The state-of-the-art projectors and hydrophones will offer insights into the underwater world without any risk to the marine biosphere.

Le Laperouse will be the first of four revolutionary yachts in the Ponant Explorers series, due to launch in 2018 with and inspired journey around Iceland. Featuring an innovative design with elegant guest spaces complemented by Ponant’s signature French Touch, Le Laperouse is yet another offering from France’s only cruise line that promises an experience that is both authentic and sophisticated.

Le Champlain will follow later in 2018, while sister ships Le Bougainville and Le Dumont-d’Urville will grace the world’s waters in 2019.
