Stress-Free Departure Days

Posted March 16th, 2017

From forgotten passports to getting horribly lost in an unfamiliar city, travelling can be challenging for even the most seasoned holidaymakers. Before you reach the comforts of your cruise ship, you may just encounter a few stressful situations. Here’s our top tips for ensuring your departure day is as easy and breezy as possible!

Arrive the Day Before

Arrive at your departure port city/town the day before your cruise ship sets sail. Try and find accommodation near the cruise terminal and look up where the terminal is, how to get there and how long it will take. If you need to take a taxi, make a booking the day before, or if you have a transfer booked, confirm where you’ll be picked up from. In a foreign city? This way, you’ll also have time to get local currency, stock up on any essentials you forgot to pack, and enjoy a little sightseeing.

Expect Queues

Whether you’re journeying by bus, plane, train or cruise ship, dealing with queues is a part of every traveller’s life. With a bit of forward thinking and a positive attitude, waiting in line won’t be a stressful hassle. Pack a few snacks and drinks to keep your energy levels up and stay hydrated, and a novel, or a few puzzle books to pass the time away pleasantly. Waiting to board also presents you with a great opportunity to start mingling with fellow guests.

Use Your VIP Status or Upgrade

Can’t bear waiting in queues? Many cruise lines offer priority embarkation for loyalty program members, so if that’s you, know what you’re entitled to and make the most of it. For example, Carnival offers an exclusive priority check-in service for Platinum and Diamond guests that allows them to proceed immediately to a Priority Lounge. If this isn’t you, don’t worry; many cruise lines also offer passengers the chance to pay for priority boarding. Carnival’s Faster to the Fun package includes priority security, check-in and express boarding (bypass the general boarding line if you arrive late), priority luggage delivery and immediate access to your stateroom.

Have Your Documents Ready

There’s nothing more gut-wrenching or heart-stopping than reaching for your passport and realising you’ve left it on a table at home. Or discovering that you don’t have the appropriate visa you need to enter a destination. Always check, double check and triple check you have the appropriate documentation and place it in a travel wallet or somewhere you can readily access it when needed. Don’t forget to place luggage tags on your bags too, including your carry-on.

Pack a Bag Filled with Essentials

You’ve made it onto your floating paradise of a home! Now what? It may take some time for your luggage to be delivered to your room, so it’s a great idea to have essentials on hand. Medication, a book, your swimsuit, a change of clothes, sunglasses, camera and whatever else you need for the afternoon – pack them all in a carry bag and you’ll be able to enjoy your holiday from the get-go!
