New Celebrity Reflection Cruise Ship Christened
Last weekend Celebrity Cruises formally named the fifth ship in its five-ship Solstice Class fleet, Celebrity Reflection, a beautiful new 126,000-ton, 3,046-passenger ship.
Presiding over the ceremony on Saturday, 1 December, were the ship's four Godmothers - all employees of the company
whose lives have been touched by breast cancer: Celebrity Reflection AquaSpa Manager Jovanka Goronjic; Solstice Class Hot Glass Show Artist Megan Mathie; shoreside Community Relations Manager Helen O'Connell; and shoresde Special Events Manager Rosey Rodriquez.
The christening ceremony was conducted in the ships' Reflection Theatre, and offered guests humour, music, courage and dignity, along with some traditional pomp and ceremony. The event included a VIP procession, led by the St. Andrew's Bagpipe Band of Miami and the ship's four Godmothers.
The Godmothers took to the stage with Chairman and CEO Richard D. Fain, Celebrity's President and CEO Michael Bayley, and Celebrity Reflection Captain Nicholas Pagonis, together with three of the Godmothers of Celebrity Reflection's sister ships, in a naming ceremony tradition unique to Celebrity.
Other highlights of the naming included a stirring rendition of the Greek national anthem, performed by Captain Nicholas Pagonis and Greek officers. The tribute was to the line's original Greek owners and was followed by a capella version of the Star Spangled Banner, performed by Uncommon Ground, a group of shipboard entertainers.
Blessings by a local rabbi and pastor, and greetings by Fain and Bayley rounded out the evening. Fain noted that Celebrity Reflection brings the number of ships in the company to 42, and recalled that Song of Norway, the first ship in the line, was named at the same pier 42 years before, almost to the day. He attributed the success of the Solstice class to input from passengers, travel partners and staff, and credited innovative design and amenities.
Celebrity Reflection features multiple new, guest-inspired attributes, including five "Signature Suites" with beautiful verandas; the brand's first "AquaClass Suites," building on the popularity of Celebrity's spa-inspired AquaClass staterooms by adding additional space and 24/7 butler service to the host of amenities already associated with AquaClass; the jaw-dropping "Reflection Suite" - a two-bedroom suite with a veranda and a distinctive, all-glass shower extending out over the edge of the ship.
Celebrity Reflection also presents an entirely new, multi-functional Conference Centre, and the host of industry-first venues and experiences introduced on Celebrity Silhouette in 2011, including the interactive "Lawn Club Grill", where guests can select and grill their own meats side-by-side with Celebrity's expert chefs, or have them cooked to order; the relaxing, private, wi-fi enabled cabanas called "The Alcoves"; "The Porch," a breezy, casual dining spot offering sandwiches, coffees and captivating views of the sea and the ship's lush lawn, and "The Art Studio," where guests can bring out their inner artist.
The ship also presents another venue first introduced on Celebrity Silhouette - "The Hideaway" - an intimate, quiet space reminiscent of a childhood tree house, as well as a diverse array of other modern venues and attributes already associated with Celebrity's Solstice class ships.
Celebrity Reflection will embark on her inaugural Caribbean season, with roundtrip 7-night sailings from Miami, beginning on Saturday, 8 December.
