How To Stay Fit On Your Next Cruise

Posted December 28th, 2017

Setting sail on a cruise doesn’t have to mean piling on the kilos or saying goodbye to regular exercise. While cruises certainly provide travellers with the chance to relax and indulge, on today’s modern ships there are plenty of facilities designed for fit-conscious guests in mind.

Below are a few tips for staying in shape during your holiday at sea.

Get active with shore excursions

No matter where you’re disembarking, there are sure to be plenty of shore activities that can have your body moving and sweating in no time at all. From zip-lining and caving to snorkelling and kayaking, combine adventure, exploration and exercise for maximum fitness and enjoyment.

Borrow bikes

Heading off on a river cruise? Although river cruise ships often have less space and facilities than their larger ocean counterparts, many vessels are equipped with bikes that can be borrowed and used on shore. Biking around a new city is a fantastic way to get your legs burning and see the sights at the same time.

Explore with walks, hikes or jogs

A cheaper alternative to shore excursions and a less strenuous alternative to biking, spend your time in port exploring on foot. Not only will you work up a sweat, but you’ll get to see the ins and outs of a city or town.

Make the most of your ship’s fitness facilities

These days, it’s hard to find a cruise ship that doesn’t cater for passengers who wish to maintain their fitness regime. Fitness facilities can include onboard gyms, jogging tracks and yoga, Pilates, Zumba and boot camp classes. Some cruise lines even offer personal training services.

Take the stairs

Pretend that your ship doesn’t have elevators and choose to take the stairs to burn those extra calories.

Eat and drink smart

Many cruise lines offer menus and lighter meal options for health-conscious travellers. In addition to choosing healthier foods, passengers can limit their visits to the buffet and opt for smaller plates where possible for portion control. Sugary soft drinks and cocktails should also be balanced with plenty of water.

Engage in fun onboard activities

Larger cruise ships usually offer a plethora of exciting amenities designed to get passengers moving and their hearts racing. From traditional sports such as basketball, volleyball and swimming to rock-climbing walls, surfing stimulators, dance classes and ropes courses, there are endless ways to stay active.

Set the right frame of mind

Your fitness success depends heavily on your attitude towards your cruise. Is your cruise ship a place for indulgence and letting loose? Or are you committed to regularly exercising?

Pack accordingly

If you’re serious about staying in shape, set yourself up for success by packing your activewear, joggers and any other fitness accessories, such as earphones and a yoga mat.
