Four Essential Dos and Don’ts On Board a Luxury Cruise

Posted February 9th, 2017

With designer suites, impeccable service, world-class dining, stunning destinations and so much more, a luxury cruise can seem like a dream come true. Whether you’re looking forward to an upcoming trip or have your heart set on booking a once-in-a-lifetime voyage of opulence and splendour, we’ve put together a few tips to help you get the most out of your luxury cruise.

Don’t Forget to Pack Appropriate Clothing

While you don’t have to be decked out to the nines, you will need to consider your cruise line’s dress code when packing for your journey. Not only will this ensure that you don’t miss out on any dining or social opportunities, but you’ll fit right in with other guests and feel at home.

Many cruise companies list this information on their websites. On Crystal Cruises’ trips, for example, passengers wear a mix of ‘active resort wear’ during the day. Swimmers, cover-ups, robes and baseball hats are not permitted in dining areas. After 6pm, casual attire is not suitable and shorts are not allowed for men or women. When it comes to evening dress codes, Crystal Cruises has ‘Crystal Casual’ or ‘Black Tie Optional’, and the array of clothing options for these categories are outlined extensively.

Do Mingle

Luxury cruises aren’t stuffy affairs, where passengers keep to themselves or form cliques. On board, you’ll find your fellow guests are ready to enjoy a chat over drinks and make new friendships. Your cruise will also likely provide plenty of opportunities to socialise, from daytime activities such as food and wine tastings, to night-time activities such as balls and deck parties. On luxury river or expedition cruises, guests will also likely find themselves on smaller vessels, meaning more of an intimate atmosphere can be found.

Don’t Feel the Need to Tip

Most luxury cruise lines pride themselves on the fact that their trips are all-inclusive. After all, they aim to make you feel as though you’re royalty, and there’s nothing better than stepping aboard your cruise ship with the knowledge you won’t need to pay a dollar more. If you’re particularly impressed with a crew member’s service, consider leaving them a detailed thank-you note.

Do Ask for What You Want

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve saved up for years to go on a luxury cruise or are a frequent traveller – you’re entitled to everything the cruise has to offer, so don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. Want another glass of wine? Prefer your eggs well-cooked? Want the band to play a special song? One of the main perks of luxury cruises is the personalised service, so let the crew know your preferences and needs.

Not all luxury cruise lines offer the exact same experience, so be sure to do your research.
