The Fancy Four: Cunard Announces Additional Fourth Ship
Luxury British Cruise Line Cunard yesterday announced plans to add a fourth ship to its impressive fleet of opulent ocean liners. The addition is due to join the iconic Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria in 2022, yet is currently unnamed.
This will be the first time since 1998 that Cunard has had four ships in simultaneous service, and the line's first new ship in 12 years. This exciting new generation addition will have the capacity to carry 3,000 guests, weighing in at a whopping 113,0000 GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) and will be the 249th ship to fly the Cunard flag.
The timing of yesterday's ambitious announcement is no coincidence, with the date falling on the 50th anniversary of the launch of the legendary QE2 (Cunard's Queen Elizabeth 2). Simon Palethorpe, Cunard's Senior Vice President, referenced this saying “we have only recently marked the 50th anniversary of one of Cunard's much loved ocean liners, the legendary QE2. What better way to celebrate her important role in Cunard's past than by announcing our commitment to Cunard's future with the commissioning of a new ship."
This ambitious investment supports the continued growth that the company is expecting to see in the future. The high-end brand is going from strength, especially after witnessing over one million people gather to celebrate the company's 175th anniversary and subsequently, investing significantly into refurbishments. The flagship Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Victoria both received major facelifts in recent years.
According to Palethorpe, "Cunard offers unrivalled luxury ocean experiences and the new ship firmly underpins our plans to continue our growth across international markets.” The brand has been working to develop the guest experience to meet the needs of the modern day luxury consumer. New dining experiences, signature bar offerings, new itineraries, special event voyages and brand partnerships are all part of the brand's evolution.
Cunard is based in Southampton, a port featured on one of their most iconic transatlantic itineraries. It sits under parent company Carnival Corporation which is the world's largest cruise company.
