Cruising on a Budget

Posted May 15th, 2017

Cruising is widely regarded as one of the best ways to get great value for money when travelling. Yet, like any other holiday experience, it’s easy to get carried away and spend a little bit here and there before realising what has happened. Below, we’ve compiled some of the top tips to help you stretch your dollars that bit further and stay under budget.

Explore on your own

There are many benefits of booking shore excursions with the cruise line, especially if you are not an experienced traveller. You’ll be looked after from start to finish, meals will often be included and you won’t have to worry about getting back to the ship on time. However, your costs will add up if you book an excursion at every port. Instead, try and explore on your own by researching and planning in advance.

Buy locally while in port

Want to buy plenty of souvenirs or indulge in a little retail therapy? Try and avoid the shops on your cruise ship, unless there is a large sale. Instead, think about buying locally while in port and helping to support small businesses.

Check out your cruise ship’s onboard library

If you plan on relaxing with book after book during your days at sea, don’t spend money at a bookstore when you run out of novels. Instead, check out your cruise ship’s onboard library and save money.

Avoid paying for onboard laundry services

Unless it’s complimentary, try to avoid paying for onboard laundry services. You could pack enough clothes for the duration of your voyage, wash delicates in your cabin’s bathroom sink or bring a portable clothesline to hang in the shower.

Dine at the venues that offer meals included in your cruise fare

Specialty restaurants offer unique dining experiences, but they usually come at an additional price. Unless you have your heart set on eating at a particular restaurant, you’re better off sticking with the venues that offer meals included in your cruise fare.

Look out for ‘happy hour’ specials

Beverage packages are an ideal way to get great value for money, but only if you’ll make use of them. If you’re not a big drinker, look out for ‘happy hour’ specials or see if the cruise line offers a non-alcoholic package, which sometimes includes ice-cream! Also be sure to avoid any souvenir glasses – there are cheaper ways to remember your trip.

Look out for special spa package deals

Looking forward to a relaxing spa treatment? While the onboard spa will offer a range of appealing massages, manicures, facials and more, be aware that the prices won’t be cheap. To get bang for your buck, look out for special spa package deals, especially on days in port.

Embrace being disconnected

While at sea, embrace being disconnected from the world and avoid paying for internet access. You can easily check in with loved ones at a cheap internet café while in port.

Change your currency before you get on your ship

Be organised and change your currency before you get on your ship. While exchange services are commonly found on cruise ships, the rate probably won’t be as favourable.
