Off the Beaten Track: Flotilla Sailing

Posted May 10th, 2017

Imagine salty sea breezes, clear blue skies, the warmth of the sun’s rays, and the sound of waves slapping against the yacht transporting you across the azure ocean waters. Welcome to the world of flotilla sailing, a truly unique travel experience that lets you embark on a journey of exploration, adventure and wonder.

What is a flotilla?

A flotilla is a group of yachts that sail together and are overseen by a skipper on a lead yacht. The crew of the lead yacht will usually provide the route, offering updates on destinations, weather and any must-see spots along the way. The lead crew will also help members of the flotilla cast off in the morning and then moor up at night at the new destination. In addition to the expert support provided by the lead crew, flotilla sailing offers travellers independence – as your very own skipper, you can decide where to stop and what to see on your way to the next port or docking point.

Who can embark on a flotilla adventure?

If you’re interested in signing up for a flotilla voyage, you will need some skippering experience; however, there are often plenty of flotilla options available to suit different levels of ability and experience, from protected waters and shorter passages to exciting open-water crossings. Flotilla sailing is also ideal for those who prefer to have control over their own daily itinerary, but with some support and structure.

Popular destinations

Flotilla sailing is commonly offered in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. With the ability to stop at quaint fishing villages, deserted beaches or tourist hotspots, flotilla cruisers can unearth authentic travel experiences and immerse themselves in the cultures, history, landscapes, nightlife and gastronomic scenes of various locations.
