5 Things You Never Knew About Cruising

Posted August 12th, 2014

Whether it’s your first time cruising or you consider the sea your home away from home, one thing is for certain: incredible experiences await you each time you embark on a cruise. From experiencing first-class spa treatments to dining at lavish restaurants, you and your friends and family will be spoilt like kings and queens while on-board. In addition to these great luxuries, there’s something about this type of holiday that floats above the rest. Something that makes adventurers, lovers, and family and friends come together. So what are these great sea-crets and when did cruising first set sail? Read on and find out!

1. When Did it All Start?

In 1818, a group of New York merchants founded the Black Ball Line with four packet ships providing transportation from North America to Europe. It wasn’t until 1844, though, that the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company – now known as P&O Cruises – started the first leisure cruise, setting sail from London to the beautiful Mediterranean. These days, over 20 million vacationers enjoy a cruise holiday each year, visiting over 2,000 ports around the world.

2. What’s the most Popular Cruise Destination?

Expect diamond-white beaches, infinite blue skies and scrumptious food in the world’s most popular cruise destination: the Caribbean! Cruise lines like Carnival and Princess Cruises provide exciting itineraries to this exotic part of the world, and with all it has to offer, you may be tempted to upgrade your vacation into something a little more permanent. Many love it for its natural splendour, but you will also fall in love with the smiling faces, fascinating history and vibrant architecture. Don’t forget your camera!

3. A Smorgasbord of Delicious Food

We all know that cruise holidays equal amazing food. But are you aware of just how vast the range of delicious cuisines on offer is? From inspired menus by celebrity chefs to rich ethnic food, glorious aromas emanate from every corner of the cruise ship! Get excited if you’re voyaging with Carnival – a new contemporary restaurant called American Table will be hitting their table very soon! If you like to create as well as devour, you can learn how to cook delicious food right on board. Oceania Cruises features the Bon Appétit Culinary Centre – the world’s first culinary workshop at sea, taught by seasoned Master Chefs! Dessert, anyone?

4. What is the Largest Cruise Ship?

The Allure of the Seas is a great example of why bigger is sometimes simply better. It offers fantastic attractions such as FlowRider® surf simulators, the first Starbucks at sea and Tony Award-winning Broadway Musicals like Chicago. You might think that there couldn’t possibly be any more in store on this vessel, but it also features seven distinct neighbourhoods, 25 dining options and over 2,000 friendly cruise staff. Prepare yourself to say WOW a lot while on board. Late for a date with your loved one or friends? Not a problem. You can zip line from one side of the cruise ship to the other!

5. Unique Onboard Activities!

You may be familiar with the luxurious spa treatments and fantastic dining options, but have you heard of the unexpected activities you may find onboard? If you’re cruising with Norwegian Cruise Lines, you can enjoy a cocktail or three in their ice bars. Yes, ice bars! Don’t worry, the staff will provide you with a warm coat and gloves before you party. Could you think of anything cooler? If your idea of cool is a little warmer, then you’ll enjoy what the Celebrity Solstice has to offer – it’s very top deck has a carpet of real grass, so you can enjoy a picnic with friends or even play croquet.

Whichever ship you’re aboard and wherever your destination, one thing is always for sure with cruising – all your worries will be a thing of the past, even after the tan lines fade!
