San Diego, California

The second-largest city in California, San Diego is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the USA.  Fabulous weather, world-class attractions, and a unique laidback atmosphere all combine to make this city a delightful place to visit.

San Diego is a culturally rich urban hub, with its cuisine and atmosphere influenced significantly by its close proximity to Mexico; the border is less than 30 kilometres to the south. Fascinating museums are particularly abundant – Balboa Park alone is home to 17 museums where you can discover and learn about nature, art, history, photography, and many other topics.

With so much to offer visitors, San Diego makes an enduringly popular port of call for cruise ships travelling through the North Pacific Ocean and across the US’s western shore. Cruise lines such as Carnival Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Royal Caribbean International all feature packages that include a stop in San Diego.

Port Location

San Diego’s cruise ship terminal is situated on the B Street Pier at 1140 North Harbor Drive. Ships sail around Coronado Island into the Bay of San Diego to access the pier. This means passengers can walk immediately into the heart of the city and are only minutes away from some of San Diego’s top attractions upon disembarking.

Port Facilities

Facilities in the terminal itself are fairly limited but do include:

  • Elevators

  • A passenger gangway

  • Customer service representatives.

Right outside the terminal, you will find the International Visitors Centre, where staff can provide you with helpful advice about the city’s sights and attractions in a variety of languages. The amenities you would expect to find in any modern metropolis are all within walking distance from the port.

How to Get Around

Downtown San Diego can be comfortably traversed on foot, and many of the city’s most popular sites are reachable either by walking, catching a trolley, or riding one of the frequent hop-on/hop-off buses. Hiring your own car or hailing taxis are also viable options in San Diego, and this is perhaps the easiest way to get to Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, and SeaWorld San Diego, as well as to attractions further away, such as Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

From early March to early November, the time zone changes to Pacific Daylight Time (PDT), putting the region 7 hours behind UTC instead.

Highlights

  • Balboa Park and San Diego Zoo – With several intriguing museums, many beautiful gardens, and other showcases of San Diego’s delightful culture, no trip to this city is complete without a fair chunk of your time spent in Balboa Park. The park is also where you’ll find San Diego Zoo, which is widely considered to be the area’s best attraction.

  • SeaWorld San Diego – Part aquarium, part theme park and part oceanarium, at SeaWorld San Diego, you can hop on board thrilling water rides, watch some fantastic shows, and explore the animal exhibits where you’ll encounter sharks, penguins, turtles, whales, dolphins, and other aquatic creatures. Opt for a premier experience to get up close and personal with your favourite marine animal.

  • USS Midway Museum – Built into one of the US’s longest-serving aircraft carriers, this museum provides a fascinating insight into the life of a navy sailor. People with a particular interest in this should make sure to allow plenty of time here – there are lots of exhibits to see. The museum is also very close to the cruise terminal, making it an ideal first or last activity for your stop in San Diego.
