Korčula

The exquisite natural beauty of the Croatian Island of Korčula is its greatest drawcard. Imagine bays hidden between sheer cliffs and secluded stretches of sand and pebble beaches. With densely wooded nature reserves, vast olive groves, wineries, and walking trails that weave their way across lush mountain slopes, it’s easy to see why Korčula is known as the greenest island in the Adriatic.

But this stunning island has more than just its breathtaking nature to offer. Explore the walled city of Korčula, with the same name as its island home. Korčula Town is a charming example of a Dalmatian medieval city, featuring rounded watchtowers and stone houses with distinctive red roofs.

Korčula Town is renowned for its colourful arts and culture scene, particularly the Moreška Sword Dance, a traditional Croatian dance honouring a battle between the Christians and some infidels over a fair lady. Walk down grand marble streets lined with rich Gothic and Baroque buildings that today house galleries and museums. Dine in restaurants where you can sample a taste of Croatia and some fine Korčulan white wines.

The town is the island’s main port, and with its beautiful architecture, galleries, restaurants and historic fortifications, it is a popular tourist destination itself and a launching point to explore the rest of the island. Korčula and its surrounding archipelago of uninhabited islands are breathtaking when seen from the sea and are an unmissable stop on any Croatian or Adriatic cruise.

Highlights

  • Katedrala Sv. Marka (St. Mark’s Cathedral) – Located in the centre of Korčula, this magnificent cathedral is renowned for its extensive sculptural detail. Popular features include the naked Adam and Eve carved into the cathedral door columns and the two-tailed mermaid above the doorway. This Gothic-Renaissance Cathedral was built in the 15th century using Korčula limestone. Inside, the white limestone pillars stand 30 metres tall, dwarfing visitors as they take in the grand atmosphere. Make sure you take the time to climb the bell tower for fantastic views of the island and across the Adriatic Sea.

  • Town Museum – On the ground floor of the Ismaeli Gabrielis Palace (built in the 16th century), you'll find an intriguing museum filled with hidden treasures. Exhibits cover archaeology, art, stonemasonry, shipbuilding, furniture, textiles and Korčulan traditional dress. The most treasured piece in the museum is the 4th century BC ‘Lumbardska Psefizm’, a stone tablet that is evidence of trade between the Greeks and local Illyrians.

  • Veliki Revelin Tower – Atop an impressive sweep of stairs stands this 13th century tower built to discourage pirates from invading the island. The tower was once part of an extensive system of defences comprising 12 towers linked by 20-metre walls.
