Catania, Sicily, Italy

Catania is the second-largest city on the island of Sicily, southern Italy, and is the capital of the province which bears its name. The city is located on the east coast of the island, halfway between Messina and Siracusa and is at the foot of the active volcano Mount Etna.

Catania is a busy port city graced by wide boulevards, lush parks and spacious piazzas. Attractions include the 11th-century medieval cathedral and the Castello Ursino, the Baroque fantasy of San Nicolò, and the Greek Theater. Just a short drive up the coast are the Greek glories of Taormina, with unforgettable views of Mt. Etna.

Catania's history of Greek, Roman and Byzantine rule can be seen in its many archeological ruins, majestic palaces, churches and museums. Many of these have been destroyed and rebuilt following Catania's numerous earthquakes and volcanic eruptions from nearby Mount Etna.
