The Falkland Islands are a remote and beautiful group of over 700 islands deep in the South Atlantic. They are 400 miles east of the South American coast, 1000 north of Antarctica and almost 8000 from Britain.
Port Stanley is the only town on the Falkland Islands, and though it has little more than 1,200 residents, it contains half of the islands' population. On the other hand there are 700,000 sheep, and a wonderful assortment of sea birds and elephant seals.
Not far out of town are colonies of penguins. A colony of King Penguines also live in a remote corner of the Island and if you preplan you can visit them during a full day port visit.
It is often windy, particularly near the sea, but the combination of wind, clear air and clean sea-water produces an unpolluted atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world.
The islands boast a considerable variety of scenery. There are rolling moorlands, vast grassy plains dotted with lakes and mountains up to 2312 feet (712 m), and magnificent coastlines with beaches of white quartz sand, dramatic cliffs fringed by giant kelp coils and a myriad of inlets. |
