Walkaround on ms Volendam

Posted October 26th, 2012

Cruise Specialist, Matthew Houghton from Cruiseabout Caloundra, had the opportunity to do a walkaround on Holland America Line's ms Volendam yesterday while she was docked in Brisbane, and he couldn't wait to share his views with us!

"Hi There Cruisers!

I had a walk-around on the Volendam on Tuesday and wow, what a ship.  Similar to her sister ship, the Statendam, this

slightly larger vessel, with it’s playful art and striking interior design theme, envelopes a beautifully enclosed pool area including spa’s, deck chairs and the like. The glass domed roof opens and closes to allow its guests sea breezes and all day swimming and lazing by the pool, even in poor weather!

The most striking feature, besides the towering Triple-deck atrium, would be the fibre-optic-lighted Murano-glass sculpture and other Murano Glass sculptures, light fittings and chandeliers scattered about the ship.

Although it is decked out in older style leather furnishings, funky multi-coloured carpets and a definite cocktail atmosphere, which is designed for the more mature guests, surprisingly, the average spa-line* of the Volendam would be around 40-55.

There is a lovely open flow to the ship, with the different areas blending into each other rather than being separated by strict walls and narrow walk ways. Service was impeccable, as we were greeted by each staff member with a warm friendly smile. We ended our afternoon by sitting in the observation lounge at the front of the ship, drinking Champagne and sampling canapés.  I can’t wait to get back on her for a real cruise."

(*Spa-line = the average age of the guests who frequent the spa)
