Volendam is back – and it’s all laughs at sea
By Peter Kollar
It was the first time I had been back on her since 2002 and without sounding disrespectful, I was so glad to have experienced her 2005 refurbishments, because the changes were fantastic!
The biggest areas of improvement were the spa features and layout, an audacious dining room that puts the sparkle into elegance, and the Pinnacle Grill (her ‘alternative’ restaurant) that certainly was worth the small cover charge.
But with only a 1440 passenger capacity (it was chartered by Adventure World for their Rugby Cruise – with some great celebrities leading the way), the best feature was the large amount of room to move and no lines to any services you needed. Crew, as usual on HAL, were friendly and professional, and overall, I am extremely pleased that our Australian market has yet another option to cruise with this season.
The highlight of my cruise? A great performance by Australian comedian Vince Sorrenti. His act was “LOL” material, but coupled with his personal cruise experience while onboard, his routine was original and so frightfully insightful, it was just a delight.
It also reminded me of why I miss being on ships from time to time. Have a great day out exploring, come onboard and relax, grab a cocktail and chat or snooze, amble up to the show lounge (no taxis needed to get to the venue), enjoy superb entertainment, skip like a child to dinner and indulge in culinary delights with friends and a bottle of red, and then off to ‘start’ your night….it’s only just begun. After all, I am going to sleep in the morning, and no house work…it will be done for me! Ah, nothing like a cruise!
