Ships Trending with Wine Blending

Posted August 4th, 2016

Relaxing on a cruise, enjoying a variety of wines, reliving your high-school chemistry days and blending your own personalised wine to savour – what’s not to like?

Well, wine-blending has proven to be such a popular program on MSC Cruises and Holland America Line, that now Celebrity Cruises is joining in on the action with its own version of this educational and highly enjoyable onboard experience.

Celebrity Solstice August 2016 launch of Blendtique…

Later this month, Celebrity Solstice is launching a pilot called Blendtique, a new wine-blending program that offers cruisers the chance to create their own personalised wine blend, bottle it, add a personally designed label, and at the end of the program enjoy the ‘fruits’ of their labours. Celebrity is following the cruising trend catering to wine lovers that was pioneered by Holland America’s Koningsdam in 2015 with its onboard Blend program.

Wining and dining cruise-style!

Holland America's Koningsdam pioneering program Blend...

The Blend program enables cruisers to create their own wine blend by mixing different wines together. The cruise line partnered with highly respected Washington winery Chateau Ste. Michelle to offer this onboard activity. Blend participants have a tasting table that accommodates up to 10 guests, where they create their own blend from a selection of five barrels of red wine. As part of the blending process, guests also receive a comprehensive wine lesson from the ship’s wine expert, who leads the session.

2016 MSC Divina Wine-themed activities…

MSC Cruises has also jumped on board the wine appreciation trend this year with its Winery at Sea program in partnership with Blend Craft Wines, which has created a range of wine-themed activities on all sailings of MSC Divina. Blend Craft Wines lets guests create, bottle and label their own custom bottle of wine, with the option of creating up to a case of their wine to take home. Winemakers also can attend an interactive group dining event, where guests make a minimum of two bottles of wine – one to take home and one to share in a blind tasting during the group dinner.

Another great option is the re-creation of a famous 1976 European wine competition featured in the movie Bottle Shock, where guests watch this great movie and sample some amazing wines. Exclusive boutique wine tastings from some of the United States’ most respected wineries are also now available on MSC Divina. This is a real coup, as often these very special wines are available only to long-term wine club members.

And it doesn’t have to stop at the gangplank…

And the wine fun doesn’t have to stop at the gangplank, for guests can order many of the wines tasted and created on board to be shipped directly to their homes. For lovers of wine and cruising, watch out for this trend of wine blending and wine-themed activities, as it looks like they are ready to set sail across many other cruising lines.
