Carnival Cruise Line - 'The Fun Ships'
By Damian Clark
I began working for Carnival Cruise Lines back in 2003 as a casino Dealer and stayed with them for 3 years. Throughout that time, I worked on three different ships (The Carnival Liberty, Fantasy and Pride) and travelled throughout the Mediterranean, Bahamas, Caribbean and Mexican Riviera.
Carnival Cruise Lines are absolutely perfect for the kind of traveler who is ALL about having a fantastic time. The tag line for the fleet is ‘The Fun Ships’ and this is certainly the case, as all day, every day, you are provided with so many forms of entertainment that you will be hard pressed experiencing everything in only one cruise. It is a very American Style of cruising, and caters for a 95% American Market, so you will really get a taste of the true Yankee Style at every corner. Carnival is, in fact, by far the most popular Cruise Liner for Americans, and is a household name in every state within the country.
For decades, Carnival has only generally marketed themselves within their own country, and it is just recently that the company has expanded themselves, and started targeting other markets. It would surprise people to realise that Carnival actually owns most of the big Cruise Companies at Sea – Princess, Cunard, Holland America, Costa, P&O (both Australia and UK), Seabourn – just to name a few.
Some of Carnival’s older ships are definitely no higher than a 3 star category. Some of their newer ships, however, rival the best, most beautiful ships from other companies in the world. They are classified as 4 star and I can guarantee that the style, décor and amenities definitely live up to this. In saying this though, Carnival Cruise Lines are not for every cruiser.
There is a lot happening as far as the décor on board. Every ship is themed differently. The Carnival Liberty was fitted out in full Arabian Style, with lots of tans, reds, gold and browns. Quite luxurious looking, but very out there. This is what I mean when I say that Carnival isn’t for everyone. Some cruisers may find the vibrant, larger-than-life themes a little overwhelming, and may prefer to cruise with a line that references a more subdued tone (such as Celebrity or Holland America). Cruisers who enjoy this though, are going to be absolutely in their element!
I would say Carnival is particularly great for younger cruises and families. ‘Camp Carnival’ is perhaps one the best kids Club on the Seas. Catering every age from 1 – 18, there is something fantastic to do for each age group from 8am to midnight. There is a nightclub on every ship which is generally pumping until the early hours of every morning, and the casino is generally open until the last punter leaves (Yes, I was one of those dealers standing there at 4am, desperately waiting to knock off for a beer).
There is a reason why I stayed employed with Carnival for 3 years. The crew/staff are treated with such respect that they return, year after year, and this is why you will generally find the service outstanding every time. I have cruised more than 160 times during my years with them, and each time was just as rewarding as the last one. I would recommend Carnival to ALL age groups, for anyone who loves the full American Style of Cruising, and for anyone who is after a rocking good time once on board!!!!
