Orion Expedition Cruises - Review
By Derek Harwood
I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to cruise on the amazing Orion Expedition ship from Darwin to Cairns, via the Forgotten Islands and visit West Papua. Both of these destinations are not on any main stream cruises' ports of call, so it really was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The Forgotten Islands are steeped in history, and during the cruise this was explained in amazing detail by the guest lecturers that Orion have on board to help you understand and get a feel for what you are about to experience first hand. At the end of each day in port, we were also given a debrief, which really completed the experience.
Next we went onto West Papua, to Agets and Asmat. After the captain navigated us as close to the village of Asmat as he could, 100 war canoes came out to meet us. This was the most amazing greeting ever, and a great introduction to the village that was last visited by tourists 6 years ago. You can understand why when the zodiac ride to get there was over 2 hours long.
These are the sort of expeditions on offer by Orion, and after an intense day of sightseeing, culture and adventure, you can come back on board and relax in luxurious comfort. The food on offer on the ship is fantastic, and the service is of the highest quality.
Being the only small ship luxury vessel in our waters, it was truly a privilege to experience this unique ship. Anyone wanting to cruise on Orion Expedition Cruises will soon understand why this is a multi-award winning ship.
