Norwegian Breakaway Arrives in Southampton

Posted April 30th, 2013

Yesterday, Norwegian Breakaway became one of the biggest ships to make its début in Southampton. In a special trade preview, this latest ship from Norwegian Cruise Line made a pre-inaugural overnight sailing from Rotterdam, and arrived in the UK port in the morning.

Today, Norwegian Breakaway leaves for its homeport of New York, where it will be officially named on 8 May 2013. Her Bermuda Summer cruises will then start on 10 May 2013.

In the lead-up to the christening and maiden voyage of this amazing new ship, we thought we would give you an inside peek as to what you can expect on board!

Project Breakaway

The 146,600 ton, 4028 passenger Norwegian Breakaway is the first of Norwegian Cruise Line's 2 new "Project Breakaway" ships, and she will be officially christened by the Rockettes in New York next month. Her sister ship, Norwegian Getaway, will début in April 2014. These two new ships will represent a blend of the best of NCL's Jewel class series, as well as Norwegian Epic.

Staterooms and Suites

Guest staterooms and suites will feature a Scandinavian design, having a traditional layout with a handful of flourishes. Norwegian Breakaway will feature the "ship within a ship" concept with the Haven Suite Complex. This up-scale suite complex will feature 42 suites, and an exclusive restaurant, gym, sun deck and pool. Like on Norwegian Epic, there will also be a solo-cabin complex, including 59 solo staterooms and studio cabins, as well as an exclusive lounge and bar for solo travellers.

Families of 5 will love the new family oceanview cabins, and there are also a number of family Mini-Suites available. And, there are special spa accommodations that can be booked, including 28 Spa Balconies and 20 Spa Mini-Suites. These staterooms and suites are located adjacent to the spa and fitness centre, and guests will have complimentary access to he Thermal Spa Suite.

Public Areas

Norwegian Breakaway introduces two new symbiotic spaces to guests - The Waterfront and 678 Ocean Place.

The Waterfront, a 1/4 mile long outdoor "boardwalk" with 8 al fresco dining venues and lounges, connects to 678, a stretched-out (instead of up) 3-deck atrium running the length of the ship and featuring restaurants, bars, the casino and shops.

The Waterfront has been designed to reconnect passengers to the sea. It includes terrace seating for a number of for-fee restaurants - Moderno, a Brazilian-style churrascaria; Cagney's, NCL's signature steakhouse; Maltings, serving beer and whiskey; and Shaker's, specialising in Martinis and mixed drinks.

It will also feature a new restaurant for NCL - Ocean Blu on the Waterfront. This speciality restaurant has a raw bar and sushi option, as well as a takeaway menu.

The Waterfront will also feature the first gelato shop, and an Ice Bar (with a NYC twist, including ice sculptures of the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty and the Chrysler Building).

678 Ocean Place features 17 dining options, a casino, and 12 bars and lounges. The 2-deck Manhattan room is 1 of 3 complimentary main dining rooms, and features a central floor space for dancing and entertainment. The other 2 main dining rooms are Taste and Savour.

There are more bars and lounges on deck 6, including a multi-level big-screen TV, the shore excursions guest services desk and the art gallery.

The Sun Deck

The Sun Deck on board Norwegian Breakaway has something for everyone. There are 5 waterslides, including "Free Fall" - 2 side-by-side slides where the floor drops from under you; "The Whip" - side-by-side rides where you can race other passengers; and the "open-flume body slide", which is more tame.

There is an adults-only deck space called Spice H20, featuring a movie screen, bar, hot tubs and lush loungers. At night time, this space becomes an outdoor dance club. You can also visit the beach while on board, with the for-fee beach club, featuring ocean views, an oversized hot tub, chaise lounges, a full-service bar, chilled towels and more! Over 18's can access the Vibe Beach Club by buying an access pass.

The Sun Deck also has a 3-story sports complex for cruisers that want to be more active. This complex has a ropes course, rock-climbing wall, basketball court, bungee trampoline and a "spider web" - a 24-foot climbing cage with a spiral slide.

Kids will have a blast on the Sun Deck, with the Kids' Aqua Park featuring Nickelodeon's characters, a kids pool, a mini-slide, a Pyjama Jam Character breakfast, Dora's dance parties, character greetings, impromptu games and much more!

Entertainment

The headline act on board Norwegian Breakaway will be the Tony Award-nominated musical "Rock of Ages", and there will also be versions of Broadway shows "Burn the Floor" and "Cirque Dreams and Dinner Jungle Fantasy". Signature acts include the comedy troupe, The Second City; rock 'n roll duelling piano act, Howl and the Moon, and much more!

Spa and Fitness

The Spa and Fitness areas will span 2 decks on board Norwegian Breakaway. The gym includes cruising's first Nexersys interactive fight training modules that give passengers the chance to engage through an avatar; and the Rockettes have developed a fitness class that will be a first on board.

NCL are also introducing the first salt room at sea on board. This will form part of the thermal suite, and focuses on the benefits of breathing salt air. There are also 22 treatment rooms, and more than 50 spa services being offered. Guests can also use the salon for their hair, nail and waking needs, and there is a men-only barber on board.

Another new for Breakaway is the Black Light Spinning room, which is lit only by black lights and neon graffiti art.

Family Cruising

Norwegian Breakaway features NCL's largest kids' facilities, including the Splash Academy, for kids aged 6 months to 12 years (broken up in to age-appropriate groups), and Entourage, the dedicated teen space on deck 16 offering them foosball, air hockey tables, gaming stations, a video jukebox and late-night dance parties. Kids in the Splash Academy will be able to use the facilities on decks 12 and 13, adjacent to the family cabins.

As you can see, Norwegian Breakaway has a ton of new and exciting features, as well as a mix of old, but loved, ones. It's a fantastic addition to the NCL fleet, and we can't wait to bring you more insights, inside-tips and information on the christening.
