Magical New Show For Passengers On Emerald Princess

Posted February 21st, 2016

Excitement has already been brewing for the Emerald Princess' arrival to Australia in November, but Princess Cruises has managed to add to the anticipation.

The luxury ship's maiden season will be highlighted by a brand new musical, Magic to Do, from three-time Academy Award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz.

Schwartz' previous musicals include WickedPippin and Godspell, but this will be his first production for a cruise line.

“Stephen is one of the most talented and accomplished Broadway composers of all time and Princess couldn’t be more honoured to partner with him to create memorable entertainment experiences for our guests. We’re sure the production will be a huge hit when it debuts in Australia later this year,” Princess Cruises Vice President Australia & New Zealand, Stuart Allison said.

Magic to Do will combine exhilarating illusions with songs made famous from Schwartz' biggest hits, including Defying Gravity from Wicked.

It will be the first musical in an industry-first multi-year agreement that will see three more musicals debuted across various Princess vessels in the coming years.

Schwartz, having spent many years producing shows at the biggest and best Broadway venues, gushed over Princess' numerous resources.

“Their onboard theatres are Broadway-calibre venues with state-of-the-art technical capability, and coupled with their access to first-rate performers, I see it as an extraordinary and almost irresistible opportunity.

"I have received overwhelming and enthusiastic interest from talented colleagues – writers, directors, and designers to whom I have spoken – and I hope together we will create new kinds of cruise ship shows to entertain and inspire Princess guests unlike any other productions at sea,” he said.

Schwartz has enjoyed a very successful 40-year career, winning four Grammys and three Academy Awards. He has also been nominated for six Tony Awards.

Emerald Princess will call Sydney home from November 2016 to April 2017. Contact your nearest Cruiseabout for deals on upcoming voyages.

I love the kind of travelling that is one part strategic planning and two parts spontaneous adventure. Whether I'm exploring my local city or a small town in the middle of nowhere, I'm always hoping to find something no one else has discovered.
