New In: A Guide to Drink Packages

Posted January 20th, 2016

Just when you thought cruises couldn’t provide you with more value, the Australian cruising industry is jumping on board the drinks package bandwagon! These days we are lucky to have a wide range of different cruise lines that offer attractive drinks packages at multiple price points – and the list just keeps on growing! Scroll down to see our summary of several cruise line’s offerings below.

Princess Cruises

If you’re travelling on a Princess Cruises’ itinerary that lasts for eight or more nights and that departs from and returns to Australia, you will have access to three different drinks packages. Introduced in July 2015, the All-Inclusive Package is priced at $59 (AUD) a day per person and features unlimited drinks worth up to $14. With this, you also get a 40% discount on bottles of wine under $100. At a lower price point, there are also the Unlimited Soda and the Café Select packages that give you access to most non-alcoholic drinks. All drink packages can be bought in advance using the Cruise Personaliser or on board.

Royal Caribbean International

Drink packages are available on four Royal Caribbean ships: Voyager of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Legend of the Seas and Explorer of the Seas. For passengers aged 18 years or older travelling from Australia, there are three alcoholic options. The Select Package ($42 USD) covers the basic beer, wine, mocktails and juices, while the Premium Package ($57 USD) then takes it up a notch by offering beers and wines as well as cocktails. The benefits of both of these are then combined in the Ultimate Package ($67 USD), which allows guests to access almost everything behind the bar. There is also the Royal Replenish ($22 USD) package which includes tea, coffee, juice and soft drinks. All prices are per person per day.

P&O Cruises

One of Australia’s most popular cruise lines, P&O has recently introduced beverage packages on all of 5 of their Australia-based ships. These can be purchased on your first day on board the cruise with two different categories available: the Premium Beverage Package and the Soft Drinks Package.

As of December 2015, the Premium package costs $79 a person per day and includes soft drinks, selected spirits, wine, beer, coffee, cocktails and bottles of water. It is only available to those over the age of 18 travelling on cruises seven nights or longer. Beverages exceeding $12 in cost cannot be purchased with the package; they are charged separately. Meanwhile, the Soft Drinks Package offers guests unlimited fizzy drinks at all times, costing $7 a person per day. Neither package applies to purchases made through room service but are paid in Australian dollars for your convenience.

Celebrity Cruises

Many believe that Celebrity offer some of the best packages for value and variety. They have something to suit every appetite – from the Non-Alcohol option to the Taste of the Vineyards Wine Package – but the most popular would have to be the Standard package. Starting at $63.90 AUD a night, this plan includes all of the standard beer, wine and spirits to the value of $6 each. Upgrade it then to $78.10 each night for the Classic package, which allows access to more expensive beverages. This is available on the Celebrity Solstice and all other international cruises.

Holland America Line

On the Australia-based ships Volendam and Noordam, you can now purchase a variety of different beverage packages and cards. There are convenient, prepaid beverage cards that can cater to alcoholic and non-alcoholic purchases, as well as the Holland America Signature Beverage Package that allows guests (over 21) to enjoy the ease of paying one price for up to 15 drinks a day. Priced in US dollars, it costs $44.95 plus a 15% service charge which is added at the end.
