Meet Holland America Line's New MS Koningsdam

Posted December 1st, 2014

In February 2016, Holland America Line will introduce their new Pinnacle Class ship, ms Koningsdam - set to be the largest and most contemporary vessel in their fleet catering to 2,650 passengers and 1,025 crew. With a regal new design, and a its rich Dutch heritage reflected in its name, this cruise ship will provide the cruise line with more opportunities to add new public spaces and venues, as well as several innovative features that are sure to delight customers old and new alike.

Since 1883, every Holland America line passenger vessel has borne the "dam" suffix, and ms Koningsdam carries on this tradition. However, the name also pays homage to the company's rich heritage and deep roots in the Netherlands, with "koning" meaning "King" in Dutch, in honour of the first king of the Netherlands in over a century, his majesty King Willem-Alexander.

Holland America Line has a long and proud history with the Netherlands, and all 15 ships in the fleet fly the Dutch flag, and the cruise line has many Dutch employees - including most of the fleet's captains and officers. The design of this new ships draws from many of the classic hallmarks that are so steeped in this history, but also combines them with a modern and contemporary ambience, creating something truly extraordinary.

Watch this video below for an insight into what ms Koningsdam will have to offer:

Public Spaces

The central atrium onboard ms Koningsdam will be a dramatic visual - 3 decks high, the atrium will be graced by an airy stainless-steel sculpture that represents the synthesis of a string quartet, which passengers can move around the through to get different perspectives. This will all be capped by a "skylight" - a backdrop for a high-definition projection that will change throughout the day.

Spanning over 2 floors, the main dining room will be framed by views of the sea, and will feature a bright interior inspired by a modern, global design - setting the stage for an exceptional culinary experience. With soaring ceilings, chic, custom furnishings, modern glass lighting and a centrepiece of curved copper surrounding a 2-story wine tower, this area will be one to marvel at during each meal.

The Queen's Lounge has been re-imagined as an elegant theatre and entertainment venue, and will showcase world-class musicians and the largest dance floor on the ship. And, the central pool area will be expanded to 2 levels to create a vast glass-enclosed space.
