High Fashion On The High Seas
Cunard ships have been crossing the Atlantic to and from New York since 1847, when they established the first regular service. Queen Mary 2 is the only cruise liner that regularly makes this journey, and not only does she remain as glamorous and exciting as ever but a Transatlantic Crossing also remains one of travel’s most iconic experiences.
So it comes as no surprise that this beautiful flagship of Cunard has played host to the first ever Transatlantic Fashion Week this week, as the elegant ocean liner made its way from Southampton to New York.
The fashion-themed itinerary of events onboard Queen Mary 2 has been led by world-renowned British designer, fashion queen Dame Zandra Rhodes CBE, who has dressed some of the world’s best-known style icons including Freddie Mercury, Jackie Onassis and former Cunard passenger Elizabeth Taylor.
Dame Rhodes showcased her latest collection onboard, and was joined by style commentator Colin McDowell MBE and New York Fashion Week Founder Fern Mallis for a series of inspirational talks. The seven-night voyage also featured glamorous dinners and exclusive first look runway shows with collections from the world’s most famous fashion college, the Royal College of Art’s 2016 graduates, worn by models from London’s Storm agency.
These seven night voyages are perfect to embrace ‘Cunard Insights” where you will have the chance rub to shoulders with leading lights, or where you can hear history brought to life, meet a musical idol or hear the secrets of entrepreneurs. As part of the Queen Mary 2 Transatlantic cruising experience, Cunard include exemplary speakers from across the business, arts and entertainment spectrum.
The caliber of speakers brings a wonderful inclusion for cruisers who now have the opportunity to do things like ask that author that they have admired for years about what was the author’s inspiration was for a certain character. Or if they have always fancied themselves as an undiscovered Robert De Niro or Gwyneth Paltrow, they can improve their stage presence during the popular acting workshops led by RADA graduates.
For the Queen Mary 2 Transatlantic Fashion Week cruise, style commentator Colin McDowell MBE and New York Fashion Week Founder Fern Mallis in their presentations on the cruise, outlined their thoughts, experiences and predictions on the future of the fashion and retail industry.
Queen Mary 2 arrived at New York on September 8, as a lead into New York’s Fashion Week.
