Crystal Cruises' Big Reveal
After an in-depth, five year redesign plan, Crystal Cruises is set to début its revamped superliner, Crystal Symphony.
During an extreme two-week dry dock period, Crystal Symphony has received the final touches to her mega-makeover - a redesign of her major public areas. This renovation marks the end of a US$65 million plan to redesign every room on board this award-winning ship.
Three interior design companies from the UK and U.S. created the visions for the new spaces, taking inspiration from classic icons like New York's 21 Club, Hollywood's Coconut Grove and Palm Beach country club life. A key creative consideration in all rooms was the lighting, and this has been used to add to the design's drama, ambience and environmental-friendliness.
Cocktails and Pianos:
The signature lounges, Avenue Saloon and Palm Court, set a perfect, lively backdrop for taking advantage of Crystal's newly all-inclusive fine wines and custom-crafted cocktails. Located at the top of the ship, the Palm Court offers panoramic views and an intimate space, with modern lounge seating, a large spiral-design dance floor, and a hand-tiled mosaic bar. It oozes Hollywood golden-age charm, while still maintaining a "contemporary wow factor." It's a dreamy destination for evening
dancing and drinks.
Avenue Saloon and piano bar has managed to retain the look of a 19th century Gentlemen's Club, but it now also incorporates updated colours, furnishings, materials and music and seating configurations. Rich burgundies, golds, caramels, moss greens and ivories come together to embrace guests in warmth, and the new location of the piano has opened up the seating and conversation areas.
Glam Theatres and Technology:
Old Hollywood glam also extends into Crystal Symphony's entertainment showrooms, the Galaxy Lounge and Hollywood Theatre. The live performance showroom, Galaxy Lounge, now has a modern and contemporary look with diamond-patterned glass doors, lustrous gold fabric panels, black marble flooring and large LCD digital signage screens at the entrance. It also features new mohair seating, cocktail tables and under-banquette lighting that adds to the comfort and drama. A new stage extension expands the performance space by 30%, and new cutting-edge technology brings guests closer to Broadway than ever before.
The redesign of the Hollywood Theatre was inspired by classic Art Deco movie palaces and silver screen stars, creating and elegant space for showing feature films and presentations. The new Theatre offers various state-of-the-art visual and audio system enhancements, transforming it into a space of luxury.
Crystal Symphony's dedicated Junior Cruiser's areas, Waves (teens) and Fantasia (children) have also been redesigned, with the layout reconfigured to create more privacy for teens and a more homely feel for younger children. However, it still offers enough flexibility for the space to be opened up into one. Different sections for group activities/crafts, storytime, relaxation, video games and screenings have also been set up.
And the Rest...
Other new touches include new additions to all staterooms, paddle tennis court resurfacing, sprucing up of tender shuttles, more energy-efficient hull paint, galley updates, and general maintenance and detailing of the entire ship. All of the old furniture, four containers worth, were donated to a charitable organisation in Hamburg, Germany. Hamburger Tafel has extensive outreach into local, underprivileged communities, and will ensure that the furniture is distributed to locals who need it.
Crystal Cruises' President, Gregg Michel, said the effort put into the design has paid dividends, as it has met the group's focus of creating a contemporary look with a classic style. "The ultimate result is all our guests' favourite gathering places now feeling even more welcoming, while also offering the stylish sophistication and comfortable elegance luxury travellers look for in a holiday setting, and expect from Crystal," Michel said.
