Cruising in Winter - Why You Should go to New Zealand

Posted May 20th, 2015

You may not think that cruising in winter is the best time to take to the open seas, but depending on where you want to go, sailing during the colder months can actually be the best time of year to visit a destination. Case in point: New Zealand or Aotearoa, as it’s known in Maori. This southern nation is just as beautiful during the winter months of June, July and August as it is during the warmer months of summer (December to February). And, what’s more, visiting the country during winter offers a number of advantages that you just don’t get when travelling at other times of the year. Here are just four reasons why you should embark on a cruise to NZ this winter season.

1. Fewer tourists around

Winter weather in New Zealand can often get quite cold, windy and rainy. This is what scares most tourists away. However, if you’re fine with putting on an extra layer of clothing, a wind breaker, and a waterproof jacket, then you can experience New Zealand without the crowds. Imagine taking a cruise through the Bay of Plenty, surrounded only by solitary islands, lush greenery, and the odd fishing boat or two? Sounds pretty good, right? But it doesn’t stop there. Not only will there be far fewer tourists around during the winter time, but there’ll be less sandflies too – perhaps even none at all. And we all know how much more enjoyable that will be!

2. Cheaper prices

Less tourists means less demand and less demand means more service providers competing for your business! If you travel to the North Island during the months of July to August, then you’re more likely to come across lots of discounts and deals: on accommodation, on transportation, on cruises and even on tours and activities.

3. Winter Sports

If you travel to the South Island, however – and we recommend that you do – then you probably won’t be rewarded as much when it comes to bargains. New Zealand’s South Island is home to the Queenstown, Christchurch and Mackenzie skiing regions and attracts winter holidaymakers looking to ski, sled and snowboard up a storm. Will you be amongst the crowd?

4. Snowcapped peaks at Milford Sound

Visit the stunning Milford Sound during the colder months of the year, and be prepared to see New Zealand’s most famous tourist destination looking its finest. Picture snow capped peaks merging with deep blue sky, their reflections glistening off the water’s surface as you slowly cruise through the Milford Sound Fiordland World Heritage Area. Think it can’t get any better? Cruising through winter also means less crowds (see above) – so you’ll pretty much have all the fiords to yourself!
