Clever Cruising Classes
Always wanted to learn about the cosmos, or Roman history, or Modern Art, or do you want to get really skilled up on computers? Well why not on your next cruise enrich your mind and body with a whole range of programs that focus on everything from zumba to photography. You can also learn to navigate a cruise ship or create a website, or enhance your Bridge skills – all of which are great for that grey matter upstairs. Experiencing the pleasures of cruising whilst taking advantage of some of the enrichment programs at the same time is a growing trend - so we have looked at the some of the popular cruise lines and their programs to give you a taste of what is out there to get your synapses working.
Azamara offers onboard talks through its Guest Lectures program. The line invites experts including scientists, professors and authors onboard to discuss topics ranging from politics to history to culture. These are in addition to the usual port-of-call lectures and cooking demonstrations.
Cunard as part of its Insights program features at least three speakers on every voyage. The transatlantic crossings on the QM2 have featured literary greats who have done readings, lectures, book signings, and Q&A sessions with guests. The best-selling authors and playwrights who have featured on the transatlantic crossings include Erica Jong, Amy Bloom and Susan Cheever – just to demonstrate the diversity. Many voyages also include celebrities like John Cleese of Monty Python or Billy Collins, the former poet laureate of the United States. Acting and stagecraft classes are taught with RADA members.
Crystal Cruises also has an impressive program that includes everything from computer and language classes, to piano lessons. Usually there are three or four speakers per voyage, with a mix of both destination-focused talks and general knowledge types of presentations. Authors, politicians, professors, archaeologists, thespians and chefs are part of the mix, and include Rita Moreno, Judith Krantz, Barbara Walters, Paul Theroux, and Buzz Aldrin - all have been guest speakers.
Oceania's programs are all about the food with two of the ships Riviera and Marina having a culinary centre with fully equipped teaching kitchen and specialised classes, ranging from basic knife skills to complicated fish preparation. Food as a key theme with Oceania’s culinary arts program featuring foodie tours designed around 25 individual port visits. All four ships, feature food tours that include things like a visit to an artisan cheese-maker, chocolatier, vineyard or fish market. These tours also incorporate mini-lectures, demonstrations or lunch before returning to the ship's culinary centre for a hands-on cooking class.
If you want to make it a bit more formal, Princess Cruises' Scholarship@Sea program reaches across all of the line's ships and itineraries. Always wanted to understand those nautical maps and how to navigate – even cruise ships? You can get a comprehensive teaching of maritime technology from one of the ship's officers via Navigation@Sea program. Other classes include art history, hands-on cooking and meal preparation, wine tastings and dance lessons.
Also to ensure guests can get all the information on the cruise destinations – each cruise has a guest lecturer or two offering insight and knowledge about the ship's destinations and other relevant issues.
Regent Seven Seas has collaborated with the Smithsonian Institution for the delivery of the Smithsonian Collection by Smithsonian Journeys. This unique program features prominent guest speakers on most cruises. The Smithsonian Collection is more about interactive almost workshop sessions where guests are encouraged to participate freely, as opposed to formal presentations.
Celebrities, well-known artists, scientists, media moguls and captains of industry give topical talks on everything from history and literature to business and technology.
Scientists, writers, diplomats, professors and other professional leaders present as part of the Silver Perspectives enrichment program. These guest speakers join the members of Silversea's Expedition team, to present on a wide range of subjects both onboard (during sea days) and in port. Guest speakers have included artist Alexandre Renoir (great-grandson of Pierre-Auguste Renoir) and NASA scientist Donald Yeomans.
