Carnival Spirit - Your Questions Answered

Posted October 24th, 2012

Last weekend Cruiseabout was treated to a one-night cruise out of Sydney on board the newest ship to come to Australia – Carnival Spirit. We asked if you had any questions you wanted answered about this new beauty, so we did just that! Here are the answers to your top questions:

Are there drink packages?

You can get soft-drink packages on board, but Carnival Cruise Line has not included its 'all you can drink' (alchohol) package on the Carnival Spirit while in Australia. It has said that its systems are not set up in Australia as of yet, to handle this package. You also cannot bring alcohol on board at the beginning of the cruise, like you can on other Carnival ships.

What type of speciality restaurants are on board and how much are they?

Nouveau Steakhouse is the speciality restaurant on board, offering steak, seafood, ravioli, an extensive wine list and much more. It costs $35 for a four-course meal, and reservations are recommended.  It is open 5.30-9.30pm.

Carnival Spirit is ready for Australia

La Playa Grill is the buffet area, and it offers guests a Taste of Nations, with food from different countries on offer. There is also a 24-hour pizza and 24-hour ice-cream area. The main dining room is called Empire Restaurant. This two-level restaurant is open for breakfast (open seating) and dinner, as well as lunch on sea days. For dinner you can opt for the early seating (6pm), the late seating (8.15pm) or Your Time Dining, which is 5.45-9.30pm.

Is there a self-service laundry on board?

Guests have two options for doing laundry while on board. They can put their laundry in the bag provided in their stateroom and leave it with the cabin steward to take it to get washed ($15), or they can use the self-service laundry rooms (five across the ship), which take coins.

Is Carnival Spirit safe for toddlers?

Not only is it safe for toddlers, but Carnival Spirit is a great ship for kids. They offer age-appropriate groups and activities for all kids, aged from two to 17. Camp Carnival is offered for kids aged two to 11, and they get broken up further for different activities, which range from board games and outdoor activities, to finger-painting and dance parties – all supervised by Carnival Spirit staff.

Kids aged 12 to 14 are looked after with Circle C; and Club O2 caters for 15 to 17-year-olds. There is also a baby-sitting service from 10pm to 3am every night, at a cost of $6 per hour.

Are there theme nights on board?

Yes, yes and yes again! Carnival Spirit loves to have fun and it loves theme parties! These will start from dinner, where your meals and drinks will match the theme, and where the staff break out into dance routines! The fun carries on after dinner on the pool deck and bars, with themed cocktails, live music, games, prize giveaways and more.

Before arriving in Australia, Carnival Cruise Line asked Australians which theme parties they love the most, and Mexican Fiesta and Caribbean beach parties were given the big thumbs up – so these are set to be held on every cruise.

Are there age and height limits on the activities?

The new, and amazing, Green Thunder waterslide has a height restriction of 122 centimetres, while the Twister waterslide is restricted at 107 centimetres. Neither have an age restriction. However, children 13 years and under must have parental permission to go on the slides. Children that are not toilet-trained are not allowed on any of the water facilities, including the pools, the spas, the waterslides and the waterpark.

What is the dinner menu like?

The menu in the main dining room does have elements that change every night, but have a look at our pictures on Facebook to get an idea of what they serve (and believe me, it was delicious!).
