Avalon Waterways Christens Expression
This week, fast-growing river line Avalon Waterways unveiled its second new ship in Europe in as many months, the Avalon Expression.
The 166-passenger vessel was christened in a dockside ceremony in Koblenz, Germany, and is the fifth all-suite Panorama class ship from Avalon. "It's an exciting time for Avalon and for river cruising," Avalon Managing Director Patrick Clark, told nearly 100 invited guests.
As a Panorama class of ship, Avalon Expression features a large number of extra-wide cabins called Panorama Suites. These have been touted as a key difference between its vessels and those of other river lines in Europe.
The Panorama Suites make up nearly 80% of the cabins on Panorama class ships, and have several unusual features including floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall panoramic windows that stretch 11 feet wide and open up 7 feet wide. They also have all the comforts of home and then some - quality linens, dedicated seating areas with tables large enough for dining, and marble bathrooms with roomy showers.
Patricia Schultz, author of bestselling travel guide, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, served as the Avalon Expression's godmother during the ceremony in Koblenz. The town is at the confluence of Germany's Rhine and Moselle rivers. The ship will set sail today on its first voyage and will spend the northern hemisphere summer cruising on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers.
Avalon Waterways' expansion will carry on into 2014, with 3 more Panorama ships, identical to Expression and its siblings, being launched. Clark also said that Avalon expects to order more Panorama-class ships for delivery in 2015 but didn't provide any specifics.
